I just found this board. Hello All! We have a 16 week old miniature red longhaired female dachshund, CiCi. Got her when she was 8 weeks. She is doing great, but really likes to chew. We have rawhide all over the house--which helps but really have to watch her every minute. Housebreaking going well. She sleeps 8 hours at night..Barbara

Welcome!

I know what you mean. I have a 6 month old mini smooth b/t male, Timber. He is housebroken, though. Don't worry, heavy chewing really will only last until about 5-6 months, then some light, but frequent chewing will still occur.

Welcome, Barbara and Cici! Isn't it nice to have a pup who sleeps through the night? I know what you mean about the chewing! I had a male who chewed through 3 metal clothes dryer vents and a screen door! LOL! Now I have 3 girls, the older 2 chewed until about 8 months, and the youngest is 6 - she still chews, but only on politically correct chew bones! I think she has about 14 around the house, but she is very good about chewing on one after her Milk Bones in the morning, and after her dinner at about 5 p.m.!

We're glad you found us and look forward to getting to know you!

We have 2 Mini WH Dachsie's ( Duck Butter & Masse ) and a Catahoula . . . none of them chew things that aren't theirs . . . I don't know why or how . . . but they don't and never have. http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/confused.gif http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/biggrin.gif

Thanks everyone for writing. I'm enrolling CiCi in classes starting in Jan. These classes are not for competion, but for helping her become a (well-behaved dog) I know you are laughing about having a dachshund that is well-behaved! But maybe it well help. I put a CD on a dachshund a number a years ago. Everyone is used to seeing large dogs in the obedience ring, and here I came with my little wirehaired mini dachshund. He sure got a lot of attention. He would not put his bottom on the cold floor and I had to reassure the judge that when he sat on his haunches he really was sitting. CiCi is stilll chewing constantly. May try to find one of those balls you stuff food into. Barbara

Hi Barbara, I have never had a chewing problem, but many people seem to really like the kongs. They put all kinds of stuff in them, and freeze them, then give them to the doggies.

I just took My little Beanie to training, he was definitley the smallest, but he did great!

Good Luck!

Welcome Barbara!

I have an eight month old mini, b/t smooth, named Otis. He LOVES to chew. We go through a lot of rawhide sticks. He destroys all of his toys. He does like his kong. Oh, we love these dachsies!
