Just when we think we've heard it all...

NEVADA people..... take note...
forwarded with permission
Hi,
My name is Claudia Baker, I am the secretary of the
Great Dane Club of Las
Vegas, NV. A horrible thing has happened, that all dog fanciers should know
about as reported by Bob DeCastro, of KVBC channel
3. (www.kvbc.com click on
More Local News) Blue, a female registered English Bull Dog and mascot of
Centennial High School, was stolen from her home and several found days
later bleeding, chained and staked to the 50 yard line right before a
football game. Blue was found wearing the visiting team, Mojave High's,
T-shirt Blue had been kicked, beaten black and blue with a blunt object,
allowed to be gnawed on by a pit bull badly enough to have gaping open
wounds. The alleged GANG of football players had turned her spiked collar
inside out so that the spikes dug into her neck, then placed a bowl of water
out of her reach.
If you think this is bad enough, read on. This
has not been publicly made
known on the news, but she was SEXUALLY abused with either these sicko's
own penises or with a not so blunt object. She was then urinated upon. As
you all know, sexual crimes are about power not sex. These jerks tortured a
defenseless, sweet dog because of a stupid, childish, football game rivalry.
Blue was treated at the ARK animal clinic (702 648-8583), and has been
released, but she's now battling severe internal injuries and infection.
The principle of Mojave High School has downplayed
the event not wanting to
spoil the school's image and has even COMPLAINED about police interviewing
his football team over, a stupid dog.
The Centennial High School students have raised
$1000 as a reward for
information leading to the conviction of those responsible, but the Code of
Silence amongst Mojave students is in full force, so the case has been
frustrating to the Metro police department.
Please, please, please write to KVBC, and forward
this to other lists!

This is HIDEOUSLY SICKENING!!! What is the faculty at this school thinking? Do they not realize that today it might be "just a dog"<IMG SRC="http://dachsie.org/ubb/cwmsmilies/cwm4.gif" border=0> but "tomorrow" when it happens again, will they feel the same and downplay the whole thing with...It was JUST my daughter, or it was JUST another girl in the wrong place at the wrong time. This mentality of "boys will be boys" is exactly why we have sooooo much violence in our communities because life.....any life.....is so damn CHEAP! Oh, I'm furious right down to my toes curling as I post this.

I read this a couple days ago on my pit bull board . . .it still turns my stomach! "A stupid dog"? Hasn't it been proven time and time again that this is how serial killers and other human abusers get their start-- with just a dumb animal? I could just scream and I would love to shake the crap out of these people. I'm sure they'd be singing a different tune if it was their dog or their daughter. <IMG SRC="http://dachsie.org/ubb/cwmsmilies/cwm4.gif" border=0> When are people going to open their eyes and realize that this is wrong? No matter how badly they want to deny it, it is wrong!!!!!

That poor dog and her family. I am already composing a letter.

Here is the update:

(Las Vegas-AP) -- Kidnapping another team's mascot is usually done in fun, but police say what happened to an English bulldog in Las Vegas went too far. ``Blu´´ was stolen from his owner´s backyard, forced to fight a pit bull and then left chained to a stake on the 50-yard line of a high school football field. Police say ``numerous´´ people were involved in kidnapping Blu and watching the fight. Students from an opposing high school are believed to have orchestrated the attack. Five Mojave High School students, some of them football players, were arrested last night. They face charges of theft, cruelty to animals, maiming of an animal and conspiracy. The 20-month-old Blu was taken from her owner´s back yard late September 27th. A staff member at Centennial High School in northwest Las Vegas found the bleeding dog the next morning. She was on the 50-yard line chained to a stake stuck into the ground. The field´s sprinklers had soaked her and a Mojave High School T-shirt was tangled in the chain. Blu had several bite marks on her left ear, neck and shoulder. A bite under her left ear punctured her ear drum. Police say more arrests are expected next week. Fifteen to 25 people -- adults and students -- may have watched the fight. Blu is recovering from her wounds.

OMG, Roxanne, thanks so much for posting. I admire that you actually read this story. That's our dilmma isn't it? We find so much need here that we're driven to check in but yet the news is often so shocking and disheartening.
Whenever I see some philanthropist making a huge donation to some worthwhile cause I'm always still thinking, if only it could be for our dogs. Can you imagine some sort of huge, national movement toward the welfare, respect, and rescue of animals? Dream on dear friends. I guess that's why we huddle together here.
I certainly hope someone is snuggling up close to that poor little guy tonight and soothing him.
Dare I say this, how come the owner didn't know he was missing the night before?
I know that five kids turned themselves in. I find no wish whatsover to reward them with clemency for their admissions. I hope they are prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
Guess I'm babbling. As you said Roxanne, the stamp is on the letter.

Hi:
It is always a struggle to decide whether or not to post these incidents. The part of me that adores this BB and the warmth it generates doesn't want to disturb our members. The other part of me says we all need to be aware of what is happening. Case in point; I believe that all the emails sent helped with the Wyoming case. Our reply to other requests, such as Georgette's recently, does help, I am convinced of that.
Even more disturbing than the fact that this was done by youngsters, is the update telling us that adults were also involved. I will do my best to keep us informed about any legal action that may be taken. If anyone else on the board gets a report please let us know.

Hi Roxane,

I know what you mean about the debate over posting the tragic stories to the board. I tend to feel we need to go ahead and let the bad be known along with the good. In the cases of abuse that make it to rescue we are are helping to promote the cause of rescue and possibly gain it some it some additional support that it might not otherwise get. In outer cases of outright abuse when rescue people are not directly involved I believe it sometimes helps keep the courts or possibly in this case some school administrators on their toes to know that eyes from across the nation or even world are looking at what happened. I know some individuals have a very difficult time reading the stories (it's not easy for any of us) and I hope if we use terms such as abuse in our subject lines they can just skip over subjects that they may find too upsetting. I know I don't mean to upset others with stories like Eli or the Wyoming dog murders but in the Wyoming case I think we have made an impact. At least in that case it appears the courts are taking the case seriously and not just blowing it off. I think court dates are still pending in that case and I'll post updates when ever I hear anything new. In the case of little Eli, I hope their is power in prayers and in any event it shows the devotion so many people involved with rescue are making. They often invest their own time and more far beyond what anyone would ever ask and seldom ask for outside support.

Frank and I dropped a couple of dollars into an almost empty donation jar for our local Humane Society (who does very good work) before we left the ran Saturday morning. Frank is an alumni of the Societies shelter. I've dropped a dollar or two into other breed rescue jars when they are at the pet stores. I know a dollar by itself won't do much but if more people would drop a dollar or even their spare change it adds up.

I guess it's time for schools to stop having mascots! It has happened time and time again - the rival team vs the mascot. It is sick and parents, teachers and principals have to take a stand. Its a mascot this time what next - the cheerleader or quarterback? I think its time to suspend the schools sports program and I mean all of them until the students and teachers realize this is no joke.

I teach at a very large high school in NJ. Our well-liked new principal gets on the TV for "Wisdom Wednesdays" - always some sort of character message. She is also an advocate for animals <IMG SRC="http://dachsie.org/ubb/cwmsmilies/cwm30.gif" border=0> sooooo I emailed this page to her with a suggestion that she might use it for a presentation. She responded very positively & asked for my input! Any ideas kids? These kids reach lots of community members...

Hi Georgette:
Have given this some thought. It is difficult to answer because I do not know what her focus/style is on those broadcasts.
Since behaviorists are finding that the issue of bullying, in schools, is causing serious problems both for the doer and victim, if that issue could be tied in to what happened to Blu? Then taking it one step further using bullying as an example of cowardice, since bullies pick on the smaller, the younger and as in the case of the dog, the helpless.
Wouldn't it be grand if the children might form a small club for an after school activity that involved dog walking at one of the local shelters? It would be a positive to offset the negative generated by the Blu incident.
Stay well, stay warm,
Roxane
PS Thanks so much for the addresses, Jennifer.

Roxanne,

Thanks so much for finding the email addresses. Much easier to write an email (and you don't even have to hunt for a stamp). Slow day at work, off to write emails about Blue...
