Hi! I just found this site tonight as I was browsing some Dachshund links. I have a 12 week old pup named "Patch". He is a black and tan smooth haired mini and a real sweetie!

My family just loves him (hubby, me, daughter 8 1/2 and son 3 1/2).

We are using the crate training method and it seems to work pretty well so far, althought occationally Patch will pee a little in the crate. He is able to stay overnight in the crate and usually will not have an accident. He is awesome!

We just started him in a puppy obedience class with PetSmart. My daughter and I are taking the class with Patch. We are really excited about that.

Well, all I can say is we are in love with Patch!

I look forward to hearing all the different doxie stories and advice you all have to offer!

Kisses from Patch!

Hello and Welcome to you and Patch,

He sounds a lot like my Rufus. We got Ruf' when he was 8 weeks old. He is a short haired mini, tan and black. The crate worked okay for a while. He would cry if he woke up at night but would usually go back to sleep, he would usually make it through the night with just a little pee in his crate. Then at about 7 months he decided the crate thing was just not for him. He would cry, bark, whimper, whatever VERY LOUDLY starting around 2:30 a.m. and would not stop until we got him out. We tried earplugs, moving him to the basement, etc., finally HE WON and now resides snug as a bug in a rug in our bed...., as for the training thing - be prepared to put a lot of extra time into training them. I also took Ruf to Puppy School - he loved to play with the other puppies but basically it cost me $175.00 to teach him to sit and heal and down. The Trainer said it's in their blood to be a "bit" stubborn.

Basically he is a good little boy and we love him to death.

Good luck with your little guy.

Brenda

Obedience classes are not for your four-legged friends...they are for you! http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/smile.gif They show you how to work with your dog. Most of the work comes at home....and you get out of the class whatever you put into it.

Hi Deannalew!
Good luck with the crate training. I used it for my first dog (not a doxie) and it worked out really well. My new baby wants no part of it and I'm doing the "carry outside every hour day and night" thing with her. I never expected there would be such a commotion about going into the crate, but it was just horrible and I couldn't take it.

I have a miniature smooth Dachshund named Timber The Digger (Timber). I compete in junior showmanship with him. I also may begin handling a Canaan Dog in the breed ring for the breeder. The Canaans name is Ha'Aretz TZ Starlite (Starli).
Have fun with your Dachshund. Training is really tough on these stubborn dogs, but hang in there!
