This has been an awful evening...
My beautiful little Morgan horse, Magic, has passed over the bridge this evening. I went out about 6:30 to do the nightly check on the horses and he was in some type of obvious distress. by the time the Dr got here Magic was down. We worked for about 3 hours. We were able to finally get him to stand up and Dr. Fazino was able to do an abdominal tap... when the fluid came out it was mixed with blood which is not a good sign .. it became painfully obvious that he was having a sever colic of his lower intestines. I then made the painful decision to send him on to greener pastures. Dr Fazino said it was the right decision.... but it just is never easy.
This was so sudden and unexpected but at least I know he did not suffer longer than needed. He'll rest in peace behind the barn from here on.

Karen - my heart goes out to you. It's always hard to have to say good-bye to one of our four-legged friends, but as long as Magic stays in your memory and in your heart, he'll be around you for always.
You made the right decision to end his suffering....... :sob: :hugs1:

Karen, I am so very sorry to hear about Magic. I know you must be heartsick & for it to happen so suddenly must make it even harder. We had to put our horse down last July due to severe arthritis. We knew she was in pain & didn't want her to suffer any longer, but the decision still was so hard to make. Take care.:0204:

I am so terribly sorry! He was truly a very beautiful horse. I know little about horses - what causes issues like that?

Adding our condolences to the others, Karen! (Brekke thinks horses are just tall dachsies!) It is never easy, sending one off to the Bridge, but you did the kindest thing. Hugs!

Thank you everyone for all your kind words. They really do mean alot My best friend and I spent most of this morning trying to find someone with a back hoe who could come help me lay Magic to rest. Oddly the one person available to come over was the man who runs the Funeral home in the town my friend lives in...so I guess we can say Magic had a very proper burial.
We'll never really know what caused his sudden down turn. Colic basically means a pain in the gut and there can be many causes. Where in the gut the pain is coming from often determines the prognosis... stomach not so bad.. lower intestines.. very bad.
Magic was very much a people horse, I think he preferred people over other horses. :)

That is so sad. I am very, very sorry for your loss. I have always loved horses, although when trying to learn to ride as a teen, they were always coming up when I was coming down and I never quite mastered the rhythm. But I have always loved their majesty and beauty and gentle ways. (I never did learn to ride!) :hug2: :hug2: :hug2:

Karen, I'm so sorry. Colic is such an awful thing-- the same thing happened to me when I was younger, with a pony at the barn where I used to ride. The owner was away, and I was taking care of the horses... even though the vet got there quickly, there was nothing we could do. My heart goes out to you :hug2: :hug2: :hug2: .
