No posting is too long!

Wow, I don't know if a name is learned twice. But, if the pupper accepted you as "clan" leader, I am sure that any name will do if it is followed by a lot of love!

I'd speak it's new name often when refering to her, she'll catch on.

You post isn't so long. Solo should be able to learn a new name. Just think of all the dogs of all ages that come through shelters and rescue groups who's original names are often not known. I resisted my urge to change my latest addition's name from Tanner to Beans even though I knew he had only had that name for 2-3 months since he was answering to Tanner and had gone though so much in such a short time. First his original owners dumped him in a night deposit box at a shelter so he lost any name he had at that point. When he wasn't adopted from the shelter he was placed with a rescue foster home for 2.5 months before moving to another new home this time to my home with my other dachshund Frank and I. The best estimates are that Tanner is between 15 months and 2 years old.

I had been joking since I got Frank from a shelter in April and kept his shelter name (he was six months old and was just in there 12 days) that if I got a second I would have to name it beans so that I would have frank and beans. Somehow I just didn't feel like I needed the name combination that would have gotten a few laughs so much as Tanner needed at least one thing constant in his life at this time. Perhaps if he wasn't a shy little guy and had come from a stable background I would have changed tried to change his name.

Good luck with the family, we hope to hear many stories about them.

I agree there should be no problem renaming Solo. I used to think it was unfair to rename a dog, then I got my own dog (Annie) and I call her everything BUT her name. I've found I have a different pet name for her for almost every different activity ("Scooter," when I'm taking her out to pee, "Kitty" when I greet her in the morning, and many much more nauseating names!). She always knows when I'm talking to her and when I'm not! (Heaven knows what she calls me...)

When we got our second, and named him Bean, we toyed with the idea of changing our oldest's name to Pork. Get it... Pork 'n' Beans. Well, we didn't, but as Lisa pointed out, they already have multiple name for varying circumstances.

I don't think it will be a problem to change the name, I am sure you will give it so much love that your baby won't even notice.

PS, the reason why we did not change Hans name to Pork (eventhough it was quite fitting for my stocky boy) is because when we got him, we also got a kitten named Gretel.

Hi Breanne, have you thought of a new name yet? Like everyone else, Shelbie has stacks of different names and she answers to all of them (Bee, the Shelbster, sunshine, dollyface, bunny rabbit, best girl, who did this? ......) Welcome to the board anyway!

Hello Breeanne,
Our dachsie was 7 months old when we got her. She was named Minnie, but I have a close relative named Minnie as well as an 11 year old cat named Mini, so we decided a name change was in order. We chose Maggie because it had the same initial sound, but to tell you the truth I don't think it would have mattered if we'd kept the "M" sound or not. We used her new name from the moment we picked her up at the airport and she caught on in no time. I think she just accepted the new name as part of her new life.

A Happy Hello, Breeanne:
As for names, with our two, we kept one name and changed the other.
Greta responded almost instantly to her new handle. I believe it was more the tone of voice, her need to bond, and the affection we paired with her response. Worked for us!
Let us know what name you pick.http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/wavey.gif

http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/wavey.gif Hi Breanne, I know I'm late with a response but with the exception of Pluto every other dog I've owned I found in the street. All were adults and none had tags so within a short time they responded to their new names. Welcome to you and your pup. Lanie
