This is one of my favorite poems.
Written in 1925 it is still relevant today
THE BEST PLACE TO BURY A DOG
By Ben Hur Lampam
Portland Oregonian Sept. 11, 1925
"There is one best place to bury a dog.
"If you bury him in this spot, he will
come to you when you call -
come to you over the grim, dim frontier
of death, and down the well-remembered
path, and to your side again.
"And though you call a dozen living
dogs to heel, they shall not growl at
him, nor resent his coming,
for he belongs there.
"People may scoff at you, who see
no lightest blade of grass bent by his
footfall, who hear no whimper, people
who may never really have had a dog.
Smile at them, for you shall know
something that is hidden from them,
and which is well worth the knowing.
"The one best place to bury a good
dog is in the heart of his master."

Thank you so much. I'm actually doing okay. I know hes in a better place and I am so happy for him and take comfort in seeing him run through green fields, sniffing flowers, and bouncing around with his smile and buck teeth showing. I miss him. I have to admit I am sort of shutting myself in lately. Spending hours looking at the DRNA website, hoping for something...I could never replace him or fill the void he left, he was was too special and in 2 years he accomplished more than most dogs will in a lifetime. He was amazing. I could have had him for 20 years and it wouldnt be enough time to love him the way I wanted to. Charlie too me was never enough and always too much for me. I will love him until the day i die. It really is nice to hear everyong thoughts and words...it helps me a lot

You're right. You can never replace him, but you can share your love with another someday.
Give yourself some time, let your emotions heal a little. Listen to your heart and you'll know when the time is right . Everyone's different. A few are ready right away, and I know someone who waited 5 years. I waited a month - and if I'm honest with myself, it wasn't really long enough.
Charlie will always be a special pupper for you.

I was in a store today and walked past a dog crate with a picture on it that looked just like my Welsh Corgi I had years ago. It made me sad. I guess I've never gotten over her. All love ends tragically..ie. spouses die, friends move, relatives age and become unaware.
Brooke, you will never give-up your love for Charlie. You will 'eventually' find room in your heart and life for another dog. Our family has a great little dachsie that is the dog my kids always wanted. My seven year old daughter could have drawn anything at Vacation Bible School on the little fabric purse they gave her. She of course drew her dog. The point is this...we are all on a journey. It's just that we're not at the steering wheel of our journey. However, we still get to see a lot of nice scenery on the way.
I will keep you and Charlie in my thoughts and prayers this week.

Yolanda, I love that poem too - I came across it when Chewy died and it is a favourite, thanks so much for posting it.

I once read in a poem that when a beloved pet passes their final wish is that you their master will offer your love to another pet as you did to them. That they as well as us understand we will not live but one life and in that live we live it to complete happiness together.I believe once Charlie was going under he was trying to tell you that the greatest legacy you can give to him is to help save the life of another pet.And Charlie knows you will never forget him or replace him by any means however he acknowledged your love for him and wanted you to share it with others. So he chose his time to depart however he went a gentlemanly manner with his head high in knowing he was loved til the end and that someday you will fulfill his wishes and grant a new pet that same love!
