Hi, My name is Erica and I adopted a new baby in Oct. Frankie is now 5 months old and what a little booger. I chose to go with a small breed because we live in an apartment but I've only had experiences with larger dogs and never any hunting dogs, mostly herders. What a difference in genetics!!!! I used to think that small dogs were little ankle biters that always yipped annoyingly. Never took the time to learn about them. Since Frankie has become my newborn, I have thoroughly enjoyed learning all I can about the breed. Now I KNOW I'll never glance past these little angels with disinterest. He is the light of my day and night(snuggled in between me and my husband, who complains that he can't even hug me anymore in his sleep). Small price to pay for a lick in the middle of the night. He loves to climb up and lay his neck across my face like a loving embrace. He follows me around all day long and even when I'm showering he's laying on the bathmat waiting for me to come out so he can lick the water off my legs. I got my own personal towel!!!! I have three small children and was concerned about him existing with them. He has never shown any signs of aggression and naps with all of them. My kids have learned to watch where they walk. I do have two problems, though. One is I live in NY and its cold outside so potty training isn't going that well. But when we have a warm week, he tries his hardest. So I'm just waiting that one out. The other is, I have two indoor/outdoor cats and one of them keeps bringing home dead birds, squirrels, or anything he can catch. Of course, my cat brings them home as a prize for me, and Frankie thinks it's for him. I don't really like the idea of him chewing on raw wildlife and coming inside to lick our faces. Or what diseases these animals may have. Both of these things I just have to do the best I can. By the way, Frankie is a 12 lb., black and tan smooth tweenie. As long as he doesn't grow too much more. His parents were both 10 lbs so he's already a giant. I'm so glad to find a place where I can brag about my baby without thinking I'm a wierdo. There are people out there who recognize the quality of these dogs. God bless you all for the help you give them. Frankie's Mommy

Hi Erica & Frankie . . . Welcome! http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/wavey.gif

We are used to people who brag shamelessly about their Dachsies. http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/biggrin.gif

We got our first Dachshund during a cold Michigan winter and you're right . . . it is tough to housebreak then.

We're really glad you're here and look forward to getting to know you and hearing your stories.

Hi Erica & Frankie,

I to have a Frank, AKA Frankie, AKA Frankienstien, AKA Franklin Delano Dachshund. When he hears that last one he knows he's in big trouble. I'm trying to remember but I believe Frank was about 13# when I got him from the humane society last April and his age was estimated as 6 months since he was spitting out the last of his baby molars. He grew to about 17# at tem months and has been staying more or less at that same weight since then. I keep expecting him to fill out more but so far is is staving long and lean. I have a second little buddy Tanner that Frank convienced me we needed to get from rescue the end of July. Tanner is a tweenie about 2 years old 13# but should be closer to 11#. They are both LH. Tanner is a B&T dapple, Frank is a Red. Reguardless of their size they are all loveable. Be sure to check out the Wednesday night chats on yahoo (see the Chat Now forum) we are always looking for new voices, or text chatters in the room.

Best Wishes,

Tom and the boys (Frank and Tanner)

Hey Tom, My Frank is named Frankenstein too. But my three year old named him that because we got him three days before Halloween. He was obsessed with monsters at the time. My husband wanted to name him Weiner Dog. How original. Axed that one. I just bought Frankie a Kong yesterday and he's not too interested. He couln't get the treat out so he walked away. try again next time I go shopping for him. I just hope that frank doesn't get too big. He's not lap size anymore, his butt falls off. But he loves to jump on furniture and steal snacks from my kids, one benefit of his growing size. I would love to get another Dachsie. Do both dogs follow you around now? Or do they keep themselves busy. Frankie follows me around with the look, "What are we gonna do now?" Is it easier to keep their curious minds busy with two? Erica

Hi and welcome!

I am mom to a young adult Mini and a 10 month old 14lb tweenie. I think having two makes them happier and less needy.

I would not want to have two puppies at the same time though, as that could be a LOT of work with obedience training, pottytraining, vet care...etc.

If I were you, I would wait until Frank is about a year old if you are set on another puppy. If you are open to adoption, there are lots of young dachshunds ages 1-2 that might make a wonderful companion to Frank and your family. Some benefits of this option are: they might be housetrained and know basic commands already, the foster family or rescue organization will be able to tell you about the temperament of the dog, and you will already know its size too. Most of them have already been spayed/neutered as well, so you won't have to worry about that. All that in addition to knowing you gave a needy dog a forever, loving home.

-Krista, Rudy and Roscoe.

PS, my adult mini Rudy, is double his weight at five months. Roscoe weighed 7 pounds at 4 months old and he is double that now at 10 months and I'd guess he'll gain another pound in the next two months.

Hi Erica,

There are both pluses and minuses to having two dogs. Some of the pluses, they help keep each other entertained if you are busy. This is my first pair but they have become very good buddies. If I take one boy with me you would think the one being left at home is dying they can get so upset. You may experience some minor fights over food, toys, treats but in most cases it doesn't take them too long to work out their positions in the pack. Just make sure they remember that all the two legged members of the pack hold higher places than they do.

Some of the minuses. Occasionally they will feel more interested in each other than you and you may feel left out. Two heads put together can think up new ways to get into trouble. There will most likely be some jealously when you are giving attention to one the other will try to shove in and claim you as theirs. Twice the food twice the vet bills.

All that said I'm glad I have two. I'd always been a one dog person and was leery of getting a second but Frank loves to play with other dogs and it was hard to keep active enough for him. Would I consider a third. I'd love to but there are time I wonder if I (I'm single live alone) have the time to give the boys the attention they deserve now a third would just split my time with each dog even more. Also I would have to consider the increased cost.

As I type this both boys are in a cuddlier bed at my feet Tanner licking Frank's muzzle.

keep you're stores and questions coming. I don't use Frankenstein very often but we did make Halloween Frank's birthday since judging from his teeth tat wouldn't be too far off. Frank was the name he came with from the humane society and it wasn't till I got home after first meeting him and signing the papers (I had to wait for him to be neutered before I could bring him home) that I got it Frank is short for Frankfurter.

Best Wishes

Tom and the boys (Frank and Tanner)

http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/wavey.gif Welcome, Erica & Frank!

We have a 4 1/2 month old, red, smooth mini doxie, named Annie. You've found a great place for lots of information, funny stories, you name it. When we first got Annie, I had a ton of questions. There are some REALLY nice folks here that gave me some wonderful advice.
