I am a very proud Mom again. Lucy did much better than I expected and came back with 7 ribbons in 8 runs, 2 Q's and her Novice Jumpers title. For those who don't know this trial was the first clean regular run because she has had a other people's contact fear! For her to do all the contacts and come in a full 15 seconds under SCT is just plain incredible! I have to go buy a couple steaks.
Saturday
Novice 8" Regular 1 -- 3rd place (she did everything except the teeter)
Novice 8" Regular 2 -- 1st place and her first Regular Q (she beat standard course time by a full 15 seconds and had a clean run)!!!!
Novice 8" Weavers -- 1st place
Novice 8" Jumpers -- 1st place
That night ended about 9 o'clock after they lost her jumpers score and had to track it down on the ring 2 score sheet.
Sunday
Novice 8" Jumpers -- 1st place and Q = her novice jumpers title -- Lucy, NJC!
Novice 8" Tunnelers -- 1st place, missed her Q and title by 2.21 seconds
Novice 8" Tunnelers double shot -- 2nd place (mom's fault)

OK... I bought 3 ribeye steaks. She gets half of 2 steaks (one for each Q) and the other 6 dogs get a bit of each such that I get about half a steak too. Complicated, but she knows they are hers for her Q's! The first steak and a half are gone... I had to repair the grill to grill them outside so that they had better flavor.

I would love to see her in action! The place that is letting us have Wiener Fest makes agility equipment, etc. It is called Max 200 and they do sponsor agility trials.

Please get us 2 Max 200 teeters! Clean Run ranks their teeters as one of the best for competition. I have been looking at their teeter with the aluminum plank for a couple weeks and have talked the club into one as well. Plan to call and see if they can deliver at the Reliant show this month!

Congrats to you and Lucy!
I've been doing some agility w/ my Lumpi -- he's 2, and REALLY loves it. :-) I do, however, often have people tell me that it's bad for him. I mean, I'm well aware of the issues that dachshunds have w/ their backs. I do not want him to get injured -- that would just kill me! Can I get a vet to do a screening of some kind to see if he would be prone to getting injured doing agility??

Not anymore than they can tell if he'll have a problem doing any type of activity. I do agility with 2 of mine. Merry, I just do jumpers with now because she has problems with the A-frame and I don't want her to get hurt there. But Badger has no problems and in general the chances of them getting hurt doing agility is much less than getting hurt from jumping off sofa's and beds at home. Let's face it... the most any dachshund usually jumps in 8 inch jumps.... if they are going to get hurt it would be from falling off one of the contact obstacles and ANY dog could get hurt doing that. There was a border collie at one of the local shows we were in that broke it's leg when he slid off the dogwalk and his handler stepped on him. Freak accident for sure...but just shows you can't predict these things

We had a person write to our rescue group criticizing us because we do agility with some of the foster dogs to work on behavioral issues. What I have observed is that the jumps that dachshunds do are either 4" or 8" -- they are one of the groups that can get a 4" height exemption because of their backs in many venues. Jumping that height is much less than most dachshunds do around the house. The other thing is that doing agility actually seems to stengthen their muscles such that they seem to have less back problems. I would never do agility with a do that has calcification or disk problems already. There are freak accidents as Karen said and Lucy did bail from an A-frame once when she snapped a nail. It was at full height for big dogs and it is taking forever to get her over A-frame fears after that. She is just starting to get over them after a full year of working on contacts. I do like NADAC or CPE to start dogs because they have lower heights on the A-frame (5' and 4'8").

Thanks, Rena & Karen -- you've alleviated a lot of my fears. :-) Lumpi has so much fun in agility class...it's just irritating to hear that "if I want to protect the longevity of his back, etc., etc.,". Anyway, we'll stick w/ it. :-)
Lumpi and I live in Round Rock -- not too far from you!! At some point, we may run into eachother at an agility trial or something!! :-) We're also doing some earthdog stuff...I found a place in Georgetown that has the tunnels, etc. Lumpi took it immediately!! :-)
Anyway, thanks again!! :D

I completely agree...in fact, my vet(who has 2 doxies of his own) said that doxies in great shape have less chance of getting hurt. More muscle more protection and less body fat to cause stress on the bones.

I don't know what the group is going to do. I have to see if I can get someone to pick it up for me if I order.... I will call them myself if it looks like I can get someone to pick it up!

If they are attending any of your agility events you are attending they probably could bring them for you. Were you attending the Wiener Fest? If so, I must've misunderstood you. I will talk to them tomorrow. You wanted 2 teeters?

The agility club is going to call them tomorrow and will see if they are going to the Reliant AKC show in Houston next weekend. The have very specific details of what they want for trials so that it lasts! My desire for a teeter may have to wait because I am going to order some more immediate needs for equipment for the trial we have coming up this fall. We are short of weaves, so that will be ordered first and I can get those here. May have to get a tunnel that can be used for the same trial also.
