This was posted on one of the Carolina lists I subscribe to. Hopefully CCDR and DRNA are already aware of this, but wanted to post it here just in case they aren't. Stories like this one give me an upset stomach....

Subject: 116+ Dachshunds, beagles, JRT, hounds, in Spartanburg SC

PERMISSION TO CROSSPOST...PLEASE CROSSPOST

Dear rescue friends:

Friday, Spartanburg SC animal control officers confiscated 116 daschund and
dachshund mix, JRT and jack russell mix, beagle and beagle mix, and hound mix
dogs and puppies from a single-wide trailer in the county. Two ladies were
responsible for these animals. The dogs range from 1 to 3 years old and most
(3:1)are females. Some are puppies......most of the dogs looked to be between
12-20 lbs. Some have mange. There are 30+ more dogs at the trailer that
will be picked up later. I will have a complete accounting of how many of
what, what size, what sex, etc. hopefully by Monday.

Here is my assessment of the animals, based purely on conversations with
those working with the shelter and on our local TV coverage. I have not yet
met any of the animals: none will be housetrained, none will be as fully
socialized to humans as they should be, most or all will be very scared and
confused. there will be in-breeding. at this point, some will be euthanized
due to health or behavior issues. To view a sample, please go to: www.petfinder.org/shelters/SC07.html (http://www.petfinder.org/shelters/SC07.html) . You must capitalize the SC to get
there. These are shelter1 through shelter 5 pictures.

Please note: None of the animals were spayed or neutered! That is the
reason for this situation.

The local humane society is overwhelmed. This shelter is NOT rescue friendly
at this time although we have been making overtures and headway with them
over the past few months. This shelter does euthanize and at this point
shelter workers are telling media they believe at least 70% of these will be
euthanized because they will not be able to place quickly enough. This is an
opportunity for us (the rescue community) to make a positive impact on the
life of many helpless animals and on a shelter who is skeptical about working
with rescue groups. We would like to handle this as professionally as
possible.

We do know this: adoption fee by the shelter will be charged. It is $65.00.
This covers: spay/neuter, HW test, fecal, DHLPP, and rabies. One of our
logistic issues currently is that most adopters come in, pick out a pet, and
that pet is sent that evening for altering and is picked up the next day.
Then the new family takes the dog straight to a vet who gives a rabies shot.
We are working on a way to solve this and not have rescuers having to come to
Spartanburg and spend the night here. This is why I need a headcount as
outlined below. Please note, the shelter has amended their contract to make
adoption to rescue groups who will then rehome the animals possible.

Here is what we need:
1. Can you give me a ballpark commitment to accepting animals and the type
of animal you accept. For instance, Sarah in Bland, Virginia, I have you
slated for 5. Three you and your friend will adopt and two you will foster
and find homes for. Thank you. Sarah, I need to know from you how many
males and how many females. I know you are looking for dachshunds.

Sarah's response to me would be something like this: Sarah in Virginia will
take 3 females and 2 males, prefer red or wirehaired doxies or doxie mixes,
none more than 11 lbs. I need help arranging transport to me (or I can come
pickup or I can pick up Saturday in Winston-Salem or something like that).

2. Please crosspost this to as many rescuers, especially those with the
breeds discussed, as you can. Please ask everyone to funnel through me for
the moment. I will check e-mail at least twice per day but will not respond
until we have all info. Please be patient. I would like to be able to
report to the shelter by Tuesday that we have commitments on a certain
number.

3. Transporters, please get your cars warmed up. Duff, will you get the
word out that we need to know anyone travelling in or around or close to
Spartanburg SC in the next 10 days to start arranging shuttles. Our own
rescue groups are still new in transport and we will be well served to
receive assistance and support from those who are so very good at this. I
would anticipate that most transports will take place next Thursday through
Sunday.

4. Other shelters - can you help? Can you take one or two? That would be
wonderful.

Please do not try to contact the Spartanburg shelter. Please feel free to
contact me at any time, by e-mail or by phone. My mobile # is 864-590-0550.
I will have it with me constantly over the next few days.

Thank you all. I look forward to working with you

Thanks for posting Jennifer. Did you notice when you were over at the SC site that there were a couple of adorable senior dachsies needing homes, a longhaired male and a darling red smooth mini? Carolina Poodle Rescue has them listed.
Hope Beagle Rescue jumps in, from the looks of most the dogs, they tend to be much more Beagle than Dachshund.
Catch you later,

Hmm.. am I blind this morning? I am not seeing an e-mail address to write this woman. I want to tell her I'll help with transport if she needs it (although, I don't know how many people will need transport through Kansas, but hey - gotta offer). Help??
