Yesterday I did a transport for two dachsies here in Ohio--then I ran them to Indiana. One is fine. He, Tony, already has a home and is a sweetheart full of energy.
The other, now named Harley, is in bad shape. I'm not sure if he's as bad as Eli, but this little guy tugged my heartstrings most powerfully. He is skin and bones and so very afraid. He hid on the floor of my car for the entire trip. He'd been found as a stray here in Ohio and is emaciated and dehydrated. He has grey on his muzzle and he's intact. Harley is afraid to move and eat. Janet, from DRNA is hand feeding him and trying to get him to understand that he is now safe.
Please, spare a prayer and dachsie rayz for little Harley that he may heal and find a forever home. He's learned that humans are mean and rotten and I'd love to see him learn that not all humans are that way.
I just cannot understand nor fathom how any human could be so cruel as to starve a dog-- and I'm thinking of both Eli and Harley. I want to scream at and then pummel the people who did this to both of these little boys. When I looked into Harley's eyes and saw terror there, I damn near burst into tears.
Please send paryers and rayz to Indiana (and Colorado) for these little babies.
Thanks,
mary

Poor puppers!
It saddens me so to see so many this way- but at the same time, if it weren't for you and others doing this important work, where would those babies be now?
Sending as many rayzzzzzzz as this ol' 'puter can handle....

Mary:
Thanks for your involvement. As Sonja said, without all the rescuers it would be even worse than it is. May Harley find the best home and learn about love.

The DRNA report says that Harley is doing ever so slightly better today -eating just a bit.
Haven't heard about Eli so I'm worried...

I too hope Harley finds a good home with the right people who will take the time to teach him that life can be enjoyed and is not something that must be feared.
When I first got Aggie from Hearts United she was very fearfully and it took a great deal of time and effort to bring her out of her shell. I can't imagine what she must have been like when first rescued from the puppy mill. She had spent almost five months in foster care with a caring family having her pups before she finally was able to make it to my home. I thinks it's that extra time and effort to teach these little guys that it is OK to trust and to both give and accept love that makes the bonds with them stronger than those with our other little friends who just naturally seem to trust and look to us for protection.
Once again a big thank you to everyone doing rescue. I'm kind of on the side lines pushing the cause promoting the idea that people consider rescue dogs. I make sure people who express an interest in my boys get to know their stories. When people find out just how great a rescue dog can be they often are more open to the idea. Of course the biggest huddle is the same one that kept me without a dog for much of my adult life, the idea that if I get a dog it must be a puppy. For some of us a puppy is not really piratical. Being single and working full time I don't really have the time a pup needs or at least deserves. Do I ever miss not getting a pup sure, but I'd never trade any of my rescue dogs for a new pup.
Keep following the Eli thread and I will most updates as I receive them. We would like to thank everyone who has sent their prayers and rays his direction. I don't know if he will pull through but if he does I know they will find a good home for him. Colorado Dachshund Rescue seldom if ever adopts out of state. The people involved are also DRNA members and members of the Dachshund Underground Railroad but they prefer to place the dogs in state so that they can be sure of the homes they are going to. I just wanted to add that note so that if any of you are considering offering to give Eli a home you will know he would most likely be staying in Colorado.

We could all use some good news after hearing about Eli, so here it is: Harley is doing great! His foster mom is feeding him hot dogs and cheese, which he is happily gobbling up, and she warms up blankets in her clothes dryer for him to lie on. He's getting lots of attention and love and is coming around. We can't save them all, but we can save some. Harley is the lucky one.

Tears for Eli and what could have been, but hooray for Harley and what will be!

Harley is doing well and my heart is glad. After Eli, I needed to hear that Harley was doing better. He deserves a chance and now will have one . . .
