What a great place. I've been lurking for a few days and finally got the nerve to post.

I wanted to share the story of my new doxie girl. We have a 12 year old black and tan doxie (Oscar) who is blind. He's the best. And a 2 year old mutt doggie (Charlie). We decided that we wanted another doxie and my husband really wanted a female puppy.

So, we've been working with several of the rescue groups over the past few months and have been waiting (impatiently) for a female puppy to need a home. Well, last week I recieved an email from one of the reps that there were several doxies in a shelter near me and that the shelter wouldn't release the doxies to the rescue groups under any circumstances. So, I went down to see if any of the doxies were puppies.

Well, one of the doxies was a beautiful red smooth female that stole my heart. She gave great kisses and snuggled into my shoulder. I found out that her time was up and that they were going to put her to sleep in a few days cuz she had been there 9 days and hadn't been adopted. Well, we decided that we couldn't let such a wonderful dog be put to sleep just cuz she was a little older than we wanted. So we adopted her and Betty has joined our life!! (Note that the other doxies that were also on death row were adopted by other people)

An ironic twist to the story is that when I got home from adopting her, there was an email that a puppy had been found for us and would be brought to us in several days. However, we decided that four would be a bit much and the rescue was very happy that we had saved a doxie that they were unable to save.

So, Betty joined our family on Monday and she is a wonderful doggie. Our other doggies even love her also. I have fallen head over heals for her. I am so glad that I didnn't get the email until after I went to the shelter (she sent the email just a few minutes after I checked it before heading to the shelter) because then I would have missed the joy that Betty is bringing to us.

I look forward to getting to know everyone on this board.

Hi Jennifer,

What a great story of how you got Betty. She is a true rescue it doesn't matter how or where you got her you gave her a home when she needed it and that makes her a rescue. I can't understand shelters that won't work with rescue groups . We are very lucky that our local shelter calls our local rescue rep as soon as they get in any new dachshunds. If they don't get claimed by their owners Teresa (our rep) starts calling and sending people over to check them out. If they are having too many problems adjusting to shelter life or don't get adopted then they end up in rescue foster care till rescue can find a good home. We have a lot of great people that really care about helping.

Again thanks for sharing your story. We look forward to hearing more about your little family.

What a great story! Welcome to the board. You will find so much information here, you won't know what to do with all of it! It really is a great forum to learn, listen, and give advice when you can.

Hello to Betty from Hans and Bean, my two boys.

My two newest (the Red Brothers, Stretch and Rusty came to me a couple of weeks ago. They are 5 mos old and were headed to that dreaded place. However, I am a sucker for them and now my house is terrorized! And I love every minute. They are running thru the house right now chasing and playing.
Good luck onyour new girl.

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome. I've been out of town so haven't gotten back to this board in a few days. Betty is 2 years old. She is so funny. The more I'm around her, the more wonderful I think she is. My 12 year old blind doxie is doing so well with her.

I am also really mad about the shelters not working with the rescues. They say that they don't have time to screen the rescues and only want to adopt the dogs to homes. Doesn't make sense that they would rather put the dogs to sleep instead of work with the rescue. Doesn't sound like they are really in the business of helping dogs find new homes..
