Ok another question -- what's a good ear cleaner for the inside of their ears? I'm going to PetSmart today and want to buy some because Mud's ears are looking a little dirty :)

I suggest asking the vet - they usually can sell you a really good brand of ear cleaner, if you feel you need one.

I just put some witch hazel on a little cloth and clean them once every couple of weeks.

I wouldn't do them more often than that. Overcleaning dries out the ears and removes healthy bacteria in the ears.

I agree on not overdoing it. My vet has me use MalAcetic Otic made by DermaPet --both times suggested when one of my boy's has gotten an ear infection. It's designed for routine cleaning--but I wouldn't use it too frequently.

Also, ask your vet to show you 'how' to properly clean ears... as well as how to get any hair out of the ear canel. Badger has the fuzziest ears and the hair has to be plucked out else it holds all sorts of grunge.

I got my stuff at the vets they showed me how to clean them and they suggested every couple of weeks. It only costs about 10 dollars almost the same amount you would pay at Petsmart.

I had a dog with chronic ear infections, and the only thing that ever helped me get them under control was Halo brands herbal ear wash. I think the main ingredient is witch hazel. After fighting her ears for 4 years, it seemed like a miracle!
I use it now to clean my cats ears, but that is really infrequent. I only clean them if I actually notice they need to be wiped out. I'll use it on my dachsie too when I find one, but I agree with whats been said, if there is no problem in the ears, dont mess with them! :D Every once in a while is enough for a healthy ear.
