Well.....Olana went today and it got real rainy and the den was muddy. She defineitely was onto a scent but she kept trying to go around the course.

She failed but then we took her to back of thingy and they showed her the rats and then put her in at the end of the tunnel. She definitely was interested and barked/chewed at the wood etc.

They are having it again tomorrow too so it turns out we're going to try it tomorrow again and see if she does better. Tha judge said she definitely shows interest int he quarry (rats - if it was only a badger or woodchuck or rabbit.............:-) ) She also said if it was her dog she'd work with it because our dog has the potential.

So.....I guess good news and bad news!! :-)

Was a nice time though. Met some other dogs and nice people.

Isn't it nice to meet the folks? These are the same folks that people think are snobs because they only meet them at confirmation shows where there is a lot more stress and concentration going on!

I am so glad you had fun. It may take a couple times and I know there are several more ED in your area over the summer (well in the nearby area). I hope it will click tomorrow for your pupper...but if it does not, don't give up! Often it takes a bit of time...but if she worked the quarry on a first introduction, she does have the drive!

Well, I gotta say, some of the folks were NOT so nice. Most were very nice, esp, the doxie owners ... of course. I hope they check out this site. We told them about it.

One lady yelled at me to "WATCH YOUR DOG!" I was, but Olana just went up to her dog and sniffed her and I happened not to be looking at what she was doing at the time. So I just walked away from her. I was really hurt. Esp. when the AKC rules state you are supposed to be nice to newbies. Maybe I am just overly sensitive. We did get yelled at by one other person, but she was much nicer about it and explained what we were doing wrong. We let Olana say hi to her dog while it was in its Xpen and the other dog apparently exhibited "cage rage." (?)

Yeah I forgot to mention that...But I still say all in all 90% of people were nice and the dog were nice. The judge was nice also and very encouraging (and she assured me if my dog didn't seem to have possibilities she'd have aid don't waste my time on this)

I must say though there was only like 4 doxies. Lots of various terriers!!

Now what they ought to do is not use rats for a doxie event!! They should use rabbits or a badger :-)

Doxies aren't made for getting rats!! :-)

Rabbits are used in Field Trials. Rats are the commen quarry for earthdog. We use them here to...you should see the show Sophie puts on when we go to pet smart though... she goes nuts over them

Are you able to try Field Trials too? They are tons of fun too...and only dachshunds.

This is a weekend of some major shows so that might explain the doxie enrollment being down. That and there are 13 different ED events in your area this summer (I am SO jealous!!!).

Olana went again to try today. She didn't qualify but she did MUCH better. Weather was good and the tunnel was less muddy. (that helped!!)

She caught a whiff immediately but tried to take a short cut to the quarry by going over the tunnel :-) (Doxies ARE sooooo smart!!! Take easiest path 1st try and see if ya can get away with it !! )

The judge called me to the back to get her and then she ran back around to the front of the tunnel and went in before I could call her from inside the tunnel as the judge said to try. By the time she lifted the trapdoor to let me call her there was already a little doxie nose :-)

She did work the quarry by barking a little and mostly chewing the dowels again. She also didn't want to come out when I tried to pick her up out of the tunnel.

So I think I have some carpentry to do in my garden and I need to visit the reptile place for a feeder rat :-)

I'm soooo proud of our little weenie!! No qualify - but she improved and did it even if a tad outside the qualifying rules.

It's hard to argue with that thinking:)

Sounds like she's a star in the making!

That is so exciting!!! Any chance you will get to go to more of the events near you? I know some may be a drive but it is so much fun to see your little girl do what she was bread to do... and it is so much fun for her!

Any chance she can do field trials too (has to be akc reg. but can be spayed)?

We are so proud of our little girl!

We do plan to take her the to September event in Otego. I think that kennel club is the one that Olana's breeder belongs to, too. I would love to see her again and show her how beautiful Olana is!! Everyone at the show this weekend was admiring her chocolate coat and how shiny it was.

Breeders love to see their puppies show up at events. It gives them a chance to see that they were right in thinking you would take care of their baby...and any good breeder will always feel that dog is a theirs to love.
