How often does a dachsie need to have his teeth cleaned professionally under anesthesia? And is $250 to $300 for a teeth cleaning session a reasonable price?

I know that's what our vet charges.
I wonder, too about the frequency...and, if I brush my guys' teeth, does that affect frequency? (What's the difference between visible plaque and plaque that I can't see???)

Look for visible plaque and also look to see if you see any signs or irritation on the gums. How often depends on the dog & what they eat, what they have to chew on etc. I think when I had Bart's done last year it was around $450 but I had complete bloodwork done and a couple of other things on the bill at the time... So it would have been closer to $300.

What is the approximate age your pups are needing their first dentals?

It was done a week ago today. She is 4 years and 7 months old. I am in Minnesota and it cost about $150. I had a blood work up done on her a week before. It was $70. It was not the least expensive blood profile they could have done. But I wanted a more detailed one done to keep in her records as a baseline. (And to make sure everything is ok with her)

Then I spent about $15 on a new little toothbrush and some CET toothpaste. She loves both! :D

My holistic vet does it without anesthesia and she prescribes Leba III, which naturally keeps teeth clean without having to scrub them. :banana02: We got it made ! :D Other than that: I rather not have my dogs anesthesized on a more or less regular basis. Nobody cleans a wolf's teeth either and they always seem to have these pearly-whites. :) A good bone does the trick for maintenance work.

In California, that's probably a reasonable price.

Do you give him raw bones to keep his teeth clean?

No..he doesn't get raw bones to gnaw on, but he *is* on a raw diet. We alternate between the premade ones, Aunt Jeni, Bravo, Nature's Variety etc and I *do* brush his teeth every night as well.

Good information! Thanks.
