Does anyone here ever have their long haired dachshunds trimmed in the summer? If so, do you have any pictures of how short? Buddy seems so miserable in this hot weather.

My two are wire hairs, so I don't trim them like you would a long hair.

I was however reading on a grooming site that they did not recommend trimming long haired dogs in the summer. They said the hair gives insulation against the heat. Unlike mammals like us that sweat and get relief from removing layers of clothes to aid evaporation, dogs don't sweat and really don't gain anything from shaving.

That kind of made sense to me. If he is miserable, maybe mist him with water ever so often so there is something to evaporate. It should give him some relief.

I'm sure other long haired's owners will pipe in soon...

I don't trim Kipper but then again he only has wisps of long hair! My baby only has the trimmings!

I actually had mine in for a professional grooming at the end of May. That's for a bath, nails, paw pad trim...feet trim...a little from the ears. Nope ....don't trim them down for the summer at all.

I am so sorry you didn't get more responses!

Come on guys! Share :flower:

Here are some older threads I found:

http://www.dachsie.org/vbb/showthread.php?t=5360&highlight=trimming

Hope that's a start.

From growing up with Afghans, I would just keep him well brushed and tangle free, maybe even out the bottom edge with blunt tipped scissors. Trim around the feet and under the ears for ventilations, and don't bathe too often to keep it nice and smooth.

Did you post pictures yet? I'll go check...

:) No, Willy has never had a summer cut either. I do all his grooming (nails, hair, teeth, anal glands etc.

We do clip ours fairly short; I do it myself so it is not professional. He spends a lot of time in the water (ocean, lakes, rivers) in the summer and is a tangled, sandy, muddy mess otherwise. I clip bottom of feet but my dh loves the fuzzy paws so we leave them. Don't know if you can tell how short in this picture.

This picture is when he is not clipped. It is hard to see how long his hair gets though you can see the hair from his leg layed out across the chair.

Signature pic is an in between stage; not freshly clipped and not fully grown out. You can see the tail is hairy but not like when it is fully grown out.

I just read from the link to older post about the concern that the hair would grow back in fuzzy. Josh has never had a problem; it grows in during the fall as silky and beautiful as before he was clipped.

i have all short but I did think that their long coats are also a cooling system for their bodies???? But it is hair and it does grow back! Just takes a little while

I have been taught that it is true. Your baby needs his hair to help keep him cool. Regular grooming of the feet and ears though is good. A shaved coat never seems to grow back in right ( my opinion ) and a lot of times it will grow in coarser making it a bit more work to keep it tangle free. You also run the risk of sunburn if you take the coat to short depending on pigment of skin.

You may want to look into a furminator, the brush is about $30 but is WELL worth it. If you go to their site www.furminator.com, and the video is how much hair you get off the dog. It takes the dead loose undercoat out of the healthy living fur. My boys LOVE it, when I forget to use it for a couple of weeks Billy acctually LOOKS skinnier when I get done.

No trimming on any of my long hairs other than their feet. I've also read that the long coat helps insulate them from the heat.

Diito....We have never trimmed our long-haired doxie except for hair on paws and an occasional mat that we'll clip. I've always heard their coat helps insulate from the heat and that since dogs don't perspire like we do, trimming hair wouldn't keep them any cooler.

Both of mine are long haired babies and I only trim their feet. I use electric clippers and it's done pretty quickly. They were hot outside when we still lived in Florida, but so was out neighbor's smooth pupper. Maybe get him a kiddie pool or a sprinkler? :)

We were wondering the same thing this summer...I just felt awful taking him outside because it felt like I was taking him outside in 80 degree weather and he was wearing a sweater...lol. But, there is another longhaired dachsie in the neighborhood with some majorly long hair and his mom told me they don't clip because it works as a natural cooling system as well as a heating system. We do clip the hair between his little pads, and to be perfectly honest we cliped his butt hair one time because it just looked so funny, I swear, it grew out so long before any other hair even started growing! Good luck!
