Tonight I got my first bona fide DRNA rescue dog, an owner surrender. Angel is one BEAUTIFUL little girl--she has gorgeous conformation and is healthy as a horse, despite the fact that she has not been to a vet since she was purchased, at a pet shop, which means she was born in a you-know-what <IMG SRC="http://dachsie.org/ubb/cwmsmilies/cwm4.gif" border=0>. Her owner could not afford to keep her and, being a single mother with no child support, didn't have any time to devote to her, so she gave her up to us. I'm grateful that she took that route, instead of selling her.

Angel is a 14-pound smoothie, with a beautiful head, big brown eyes (BOY! Can she do the L@@K!!!), and a tail that never stops wagging. The pet store had listed her color as "wild boar." Yeah, right. She's that kind of golden biscuit color--probably has some wirehair in her shady past. She's very affectionate and playful and she is not afraid of ANYthing! In the vet's waiting room, she visited with everyone, and even in the examining room, she was having a wonderful time...until the first shot. She let out SUCH a squeal! Poor thing--she hasn't had any vaccines. She isn't spayed either. But the vet popped a little cookie in her mouth and she quieted right down. Until she had finished the cookie, at which time she looked around for more food, then started whimpering again. So she got another cookie... This is a smart little dog!! http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/lol.gif

I brought her home and she took over immediately. There she was, up on the sofa, chewing away on her new bone. But alas, Nadine, who is fostering her, came to pick her up all too soon. Nadine brought Arnold with her, to introduce him since they're going to be roommates for a while, and Angel growled and snarled. Arnold ran and hid. After a few minutes, they were curled up next to each other on the sofa, and Angel was fast asleep. A big day for the little girl.

We introduced her to Peaches and Farfel outside. She and Peaches seemed to really like each other. At last, Peaches has a gal pal!

She's going to be adopted so fast! It's nice to have a DRNA dog who hasn't been abused and isn't fighting for her life.

I have a foster almost as perfect as Angel. Her name is Granny and she was busted out of the shelter at the young age of fifteen. She a gray/brown/tan and she is a little sweetie. Let's see...she has cataracts, almost deaf, looked like a skeleton with skin stretched over, two large mammary tumors, a bad heart murmur, rotten teeth, and pnuemonia, almost perfect. She has gained almost 2 pounds in a week and a half and she trots along behind me everywhere...even though she has balancing issues. Her hair is growing back in nicely thanks to seaweed meal. She absolutely adores me and has decided to keep ME so I guess she is here to stay.

Pamela- I was so sure your story was going to end with a foster care fight. One day with you and I fear Angel might have stayed. I am happy you got a happy doggie this time to balance things out.

Hi Angel,

I think some of heard a little bit of your story when you old family was trying to sell you. I'm glad you've made it into safe hands and I'm sure you will soon have a new forever home which can afford the regular care you need as well as having the time to give you the love you deserve.

Granny you are one lucky girl to finally have your freedom and to have found a home that will give you love and comfort for the rest of your life. I'm sorry you had to spend so many years in that
disgusting place.

Wow, thats Great Pamela!

I sure hope you are remembering to take pictures of all the puppers you help along the way to their forever homes. The stories will make a wonderful scrap book -something I will want to see WHEN we manage to meet someday.

Shellie do you have pics of Granny up on your website??? She sounds awfully sweet.

Hats off to you both for all you do!

Yea Granny and Angel. Both in the loving arms of DRNA members!

I don't think people realize how special the older dogs are. We took in Josephine after her mom died and the rest of the family abandoned her. She was 10 years old. She is the absolute sweetest dog I've ever met. I would love to see Granny and Angel.

We are getting some expert assistance in using the digital camera, so we can take pictures of Angel to post her on the DRNA page. I hope we can do her justice--she is so pretty! I'll alert everyone when they're available.

Shelley, I loved hearing about Granny. I want to adopt all the old dogs on the Dachshunds Needing Homes page--they break my heart. I wish I had more room!!! http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/crying.gif

Angel Update:

1. She has extreme Frito feet! She seemed a bit alarmed when I stuffed my nose into her paw, but then she went back to sleep. Should I include this tidbit in her DRNA listing? "Beautiful, smart little mini smooth with extreme Frito feet! Any takers?"

2. Farfel exerted his alpha status in the pack in the office today. We handed out the rawhide chewies (taught her to sit in about 10 seconds...), and Farfel dropped his and ran after her to take hers away. He grabbed it, she gave him a snap and a snarl, he gave her a BIG DOG snap and snarl, and she backed right down. She still terrorizes Arnold, though, but then, Arnold is at the bottom of the pack hierarchy and probably always will be...

3. When she pees outside, she lifts her leg against trees!!! Dominant? Oh, I THINK so!

4. We are calling her Angie, because it sounds enough like "Angel" and she recognizes it as her name. Nadine just couldn't stand calling her "Angel."

Shelley, you're right--I want to keep 'em all! But I do get to see her in the office every day. http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/biggrin.gif

She's having her pictures taken tomorrow and we'll post her next week. She also gets spayed next week. I'm sure she'll love that... http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/crying.gif
