This comes from the wonderful Lee Wheeler of HUA:
Friends,

It has become obvious in dealing with the officials in Pennsylvania that
they will not make any effort to help the dogs in puppymills because the dogs
don't vote or have money to donate to political campaigns. (Just this week a
politician told me that the only way that they were even going to enforce the
law that currently exists, much less change the law, is if it was important
to people who donated a lot of money to political campaigns). It is
critically important that we can show them that there are an enormous number
of people who care about the dogs and those people do vote. It is important
to show the officials that people will not visit Lancaster County,
Pennsylvania until something is done to stop the suffering. We have to show
that if they allow the puppymills to continue, the county and the businesses
will be hurt financially. Money is the only language that they understand.

For anyone not familiar with puppymills in Pennsylvania please visit

Click on Prisoners of Greed. In Pennsylvania the majority
of puppymills are concentrated in one single county - Lancaster County. The
officials refuse to enforce the law there because they are blinded by the Pet
Breeders Association and the Farm Bureau who throw around a lot of money in
political campaigns. The man in charge of the state agency that is supposed
to enforce the law has said that he will not enforce it in Lancaster County.
The conditions of the mills are horrible. The majority of the mills are
operated by people who are of Amish or Mennonite religious beliefs and
therefore usually do not have electricity. So the majority of the kennels do
not have have heat or airconditioning. There are small short haired dogs out
in wooden boxes in below zero temperatures today. These dogs are bred over
and over until they die. If they don't die, they are sold to research labs
when they no longer make money for the kennel. Should you have any thoughts
about Amish and Mennonite people having compassion for their animals, you
only have to read the article in the local newspaper today that talks about a
13 year old sheltie kept in a kennel piled with feces for 9 years, never one
time ever getting out of the cage in 9 years. When he was rescued he was
lame and limped in circles because he had gone round and round in circles out
of boredom in the cage for 9 years. I have personally been to the kennels in
Lancaster County. I have seen and touched the dogs and can describe the
conditions from my own personal observation. Any description I could give
would not even begin to describe how terribly the dogs suffer.

I have set up an on line petition so that peoples' voices can be heard. It's
very easy and will only take a second of your time.
http://www.hua.org/Prison/millpetition1.html (http://www.hua.org/Prison/millpetition1.html[/URL)
and fill in a few blanks.

Please forward this email to every person, egroup, mailing list that you
know. It's critically important that we have a huge response.

Thanks so much,
Lee Wheeler

These politicians make me sick. Its ok to let animals suffer as long as it doesnt effect them, are they even human???? I guess not.
For some reason the link wont work for me, I'll try to post again. Hope this works. http://www.hua.org/Prison/millpetition1.html

These people make me want to scream and throw things at them! http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/angryfire.gif We signed the petition and I am forwarding this site to everyone I know. With one of the projects I am working on at the moment, I have federal permission to go onto any property in our county with or without permission of the owners. I wish this extended to Lancaster County so that I could document some of these cases......

Money money money, that's all they see!http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/mad.gif I'll never understand WHY these people feel the way they do about dogs. I'm sorry, dogs are NOT livestock!!!! They are and always have been MAN'S BEST FRIEND!! It's just beyond disgust.

I used to want to visit Lancaster, PA. to see the beauty and Amish. My Dad took a trip all through there and D.C. a few years ago, and took lots of pics. WELL, those pics will just have to be enough for me, as now I am turned off knowing what goes on in Lancaster.http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/mad.gif

I signed the petition. Hopefully it will help.

I've signed. Anyway of finding out the politician's name and making it public. Also I have insurance through Farm Bureau who sells insurance to a lot of non-farm people. If they are supporting the puppy mills perhaps petitions should be sent to them.

I wonder if we could plan some sort of huge rally near this summer's fair in Kutztown, isn't it? What do you think?

I have signed this petition and sent it on to some family and friends.

This makes me sick to my stomach. To think about these poor little dogs and puppies with no heat and air conditioning. It is all about $$$$$$$$$ for these Amish Freakshttp://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/mad.gif

My husband and I were just talking about where to go for summer vacation this year. He told me his parents used to take him to a place called Host Farm when he was little. When I asked where it was, he said "Lancaster area" I said " No way", as soon as I told him why he said " They we go to the Poconos instead".

I refuse to giv ethose creeps one penny of mine!!!

I know this is probably not a wise idea, but if I knew how to create a web page, I would do so about the Amish being involved with puppymills. I realize that NOT ALL Amish are, but I am so disgusted by this, and have lost respect in those Amish who participate in this.

I don't know, it's just a thought, but I would love to spread the word!!!!http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/mad.gif At this point, I really could care less if it jeopardized their religion/lifestyle.

Any IDEAS anyone???? Most people are so unaware (I was up until recently) about this going on. It is incredibly sickening.http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/crying.gif

I just looked up the Lancaster PA Chamber of Commerce. It just so happens that they are advertising that there are booth spots still available for the 2001 Expo. Any takers?

Also, I just HAPPENED to run across the e-mail address of the president of the C of C: Thomas Baldrige (that's how they spelled it): tbaldrig@lcci.com just in case anyone wanted to explain to him why they don't want to go to Lancaster for vacation.

Thanks for the e-mail address....I will be e-mailing old Tommy-boy about what I think of his fair county...plus, I am also sending him a copy of the petition. Anyone else willing to send him an e-mail and a copy of the petition? I think that maybe if he gets enough copies...he might begin to realize how this is going to affect his county..and hence his job!

one more thing...here is my new slogan which will be attached to Tom's e-mail:

Save a life! Boycott counties which support puppy mills!
