My new baby comes home in two days and I can't wait. I'm a little nervous about raising a dachshund, since this is my first. My husband and I have met him twice and played with him. He's adorable. We are going with the breeder to the vet to met his vet and make sure everything goes well. Then after his shots he comes home. He is a miniture tan and black short hair. He's too precious for words. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, I only want what's best for him.

Congratulations! I envy you. Be sure to post when he comes home! My first puppy of my own is now 4 years old, but I remember how nervous I was when we first got her. My first advice? Be ready to spend a lot of time with him the first couple of days, cuz he'll probably miss his littermates. Feel free to post with any questions at all--there are some very knowledgeable people here. And we want to see LOTS of PICTURES!

Welcome to the Dachshund world, Shannon!
I got my very first dapple long hair girlie about two months ago and she is the best dog ever. They are feisty little devils who will make you laugh uncontrolably. Their will is amazing, if they want something done, they will not stop till their goal is accomplished! And as for size, you forget quickly how small they are because they are such large minded, animated dogs with amazing bravery and wit. Just wait you will be overwhelmed. The first month is kinda tough. Once they potty train and stop trying to eat everything in the house, you really start to enjoy them.

Gatsby came home last night and his first night was a little tough. So far he's played well and ate pretty good. He seems happy but doesn't like to be in his pen. He wants to be held all the time. He's so pretty I can't help but baby him.

Shannon:

Did he wail all night? I was going to tell you to expect that; it's pretty typical, I think. I remember when Annie first came to us she didn't want to let me out of her sight for the first several days. It wasn't even enough that I was in the same room with her--she had to be in physical contact with me! We both took a week off from work to be with her, and my husband took a picture of me sitting in the X-pen in the back yard, reading, with Annie in my lap! They're so used to the closeness of the litter, they're very lonely when they're first taken away. Just spend as much time with him as you can, and he'll calm down within a few days.

Hi Shannon!
Congrats on your new addition. I remember very well the first night we brought our new puppy home (9 years ago already!) We thought she would be happy in her new nice and comfy pet bed - WRONG!! - she has been in our bed ever since her first night home!Good luck with her - it will take time and patience but you are on your way to having a wonderful life long friend! Keep up posted!

Actually, Gatsby has been a good little boy. He didn't whine hardly at all last night, he did however make his way into bed with us and will probably be there again tonight. He does want to be near someone though. He has managed to sleep in his pen by himself for a couple of hours. I'm just unsure of how much he's supposed to be eating and whether or not he's getting enough.

I have a miniature smooth Dachshund named Timber, or Timber The Digger. I compete in junior showmanship and might begin handling a Canaan Dog in the breed ring. The Canaans name is Starli, or Ha'Aretz TZ Starlite.
Have fun with your new Dachshund!

Forget about him sleeping in his crate...he already has you trained! http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/biggrin.gif Henry was awful his first night. We were trying not to let him sleep with us.....uh, huh...With Jake, he went to bed with us the first night, sleeping the entire night on Mandy's pillow - no crying, no accidents.

Once you let them in the bed....they are there to stay. We now sleep with Henry, Henry's baby (a lamb's wool toy), Jakey, Jakey's favorite nylabone, and whoever we are fostering.

We are upgrading to a king size bed http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/biggrin.gif Unfortunately it's on back order for another 9 weeks. Mandy accuses me of hogging the bed and blankets...but I keep telling her http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/biggrin.gif It's the dogs!
