My boys have an audition next weekend and they have to stand and stay. Only problem is they think stay means sit and stay. We've just always made them sit, then asked them to stay.

How do you teach them to stand?

I taught Twix the stand command by having her sit and then luring her into a standing position with a treat by holding the treat in front of her and then pulling it back. It didn't take long for her to learn it that way. Now, how do you teach stay?

I use a clicker to train my guys to stand for conformation. I put them on a leash, lure or gently tug them into a stand and then click and treat. I gradually shape the behavior to get them to stand in a show pose. I use the command "Stand pretty". I make them hold the pose for longer and longer periods of time before I click and release them. I also start moving farther and farther away. If they break, I tell them no, move them back to where they were and start over again. It doesn't take them long to learn.
