Good news folks!!! AKC has decided NOT to go forward with the agreement
with Petland!!!
Here is the statement that was issued:
<agreement with Petland in order to facilitate the registration of dogs that
are already AKC registrable.
AKC's Board of Directors and management believed that this agreement would
have helped to further the mission of the AKC. Promoting responsible dog
ownership to new puppy owners, implementing our care and conditions
policies, and exposing more dog owners to AKC educational programs and
services would have had even greater reach.
In the past few weeks we have received many comments about this agreement,
both positive and negative. We have listened to the concerns and because
this issue has become so divisive, we believe it is in the best interest of
our sport and the American Kennel Club not to go forward with this
initiative.

No providing that they are not doing something "sneaky", it appears they have come to their senses!!

Basically they were going to have Petland add in the registration price to the purchase so that all dogs that left the store would be registered.
Great news that they are not going through with it!!!! Now if they only had the Cajones to fire the numb-nutts that came up with the idea in the first place.

and I wasn't the only one. AKC is supposed to be the leader of purebred dogs, they are supposed to be educating on responsible pet ownership...ie breeder research, puppy mills, commercial breeders, health etc. Where do they think Petland gets their puppies?? Do they realize that Petland has been one of the LARGEST pet stores that has had numerous complaints of neglect, sick puppies, poor conditions and even employee abuse of animals. Could a buyer research a breeder who sold its puppy to Petland.....NO. Petland and any other pet store I have ever inquired about where they got their puppies (I accused puppy mills and they said they were local loving breeders...BS) I said PROVE IT and I have never had them show me papers or give me info on where they obtained their puppies, of course we all KNOW. Soo I was definately up in arms over the whole situation and really we thought it was a done deal.
AKC is making a LOT of enemies with their Fanciers, esp with their register more dogs birdbrain ideas. They are slowly but surely degrading themselves. Truth be known, there are ENTIRELY too many Puppy Mills using the 50 other registries and pet buyers believe they are all the same. These other registries were invented due to AKC's DNA profiling program. Too many dogs were having their papers revoked due to inaccurate information on parentage...sooo they invented their own registries, made them cheaper to use, don't require DNA testing for frequently used sires and they made themselves the perfect, continue our poorly bred dogs kind of programs and the pet buyer doesn't know the difference and many just don't care. Well people you HAVE to care. While you may be getting a purebred dog (or maybe not) the fact is, you might as well wipe your but with its pedigree if they are not AKC registered because the pedigree will not be correct. Additionally, if you have an AKC registerable dog and really all you want the dog for is a loving pet, get it registered. There are sooo many things you can do with your puppers that is not only rewarding for the dog, but also rewarding for you. Get your kids involved, join a local dachshund club, offer your help and assistance, educate when you can. AKC isn't just for breeders, it is for ALL AKC dogs, pets included. Start with a basic obedience, take them to some earthdog tests, do Rally, train in Agility....the list goes on and on and it is FUN! If you have a rescue that looks like a dachshund, obtain an ILP number and get involved. You will never know what you are missing if you never give it a try. I love doing Earthdog and the BIGGEST reason I love it is because my dogs love it. (They love bunnies too, but Momma can't do that much walking!!) I feel taking my guys to earthdog events is like saying THANK YOU for all they do for me.
So if you think your AKC registered dogs papers don't mean anything because you have no intention of having anything other than a pet...Think Again. Those papers is what keeps AKC and Fanciers doing what we do and if you register your dog and get involved, maybe AKC won't feel the need to think up god awful ways to get more dogs registered!
JMO....Do all you can to educate people. Some people just can't be educated, but for everyone who can't, there is likely 3 who can. Trust me, exposure to people who are responsible pet owners can quickly change or conform, if you will, those who through lack of education, didn't know any better.

I had gotten the news from my doxie club I belong to. To say the least I was thrilled to hear that it didn't go through. I sent AKC an e-mail to let them know just how I felt about it also. But before I did send it I asked my roommate to read it first. I am not the best person at grammar. She didn't think I really needed to sign it:
Most Disgustedly, instead of Sincerely, come on Sincerely is when your trying to be nice when you have a reason to believe someone is doing some thing out of ignorance. I don't care if the $$$ isn't coming in from registrations or not. Cut corners like everyone else. But don't toss away your standards & princapls.
OK it is over time to let go of it.
Just had to add my 2 cents. :D

Oh wow, I didn't realize that this was going on. I'm glad that they didn't go through with it. There was a Petland near my house and it just closed this year. I was so happy, hehe.
