View Full Version : Leaving Puppy Home Alone…
Ziggy

We have tried to leave our 11-week-old Ziggy at home by himself, but he barks, howls, etc. We leave him in the kitchen, with the radio on, all his toys, and his crate, but it doesn’t help. We know that he has separation anxiety, but what can we do to make him feel better about being left alone?
We would really appreciate any advice we can get.

My Dante did this too, I just ended up having to wait for him to grow out of it. I had the benefit of living in a house, not an apartment, so don't disturb neighbors doing so. I am sure some of the more knowledgeable members here will have advice.

"Practice" leaving Ziggy alone in his crate for 10 seconds, then half a minute, a minute, and so on. This will help accustom him to the idea that you always return. Don't make a big fuss over him when you leave--just tell him in a calm voice to "be a good dog" or something like that, and then leave. Try not to make a big fuss when you return, either (this is more difficult!). Eventually you may be able to desensitize him to your comings and goings.

We are having the same trouble with our new puppy Wally, who is 8 weeks old. Right now, we are practicing for short amounts of time, but you'd think we are torturing him. He "cries" and barks constantly, only taking a break to get a breath. I just hope it doesn't take too long for him to grow out of this.
