I have been contacted a few times in the past week from Pork Chop's previous owners from South Carolina. Now, I know that this is usually taboo in rescue/adoption cases, but they are wicked nice people. I actually had some questions for them about Choppy's health and history, and they have been very helpful. Here are some of the things that I learned:

They adopted Pork Chop from the local SPCA at a year old. He had mange, and was treated for that.

He went down on the day after Thanksgiving in 2003. They took him to the emergency vet and they put him on steroids for 2 days, then he had surgery.

After the surgery, he went through physical therapy for a year.

The couple had a baby, and Choppy was not into sharing attention in the house. He became very destructive, tearing apart an entire room!

I really admire these people for doing what they did. They really love Pork Chop, the man even has Pork Chop's name and face tatooed on his arm!

I truly admire their love and courage for doing this, what they describe as "the hardest thing they have ever done". I just wanted to bring this up and share it with everyone.

I think that is wonderful ! You got to meet Porkchop's former owners and that you got more background on Porkchop. It says a lot about his former owners how much time and energy and love they gave to Porkchop. You do'nt see that every day .

It's nice to hear that good decent people were doing all they could to keep the little guy part of their family as long as they could and then went further to see that he was adopted. Kudos to them and you for having such big hearts.

OMG Paul!!!! This is so touching.

See this is so important to share with people. People usually tend to think that those giving up their pets are "bad, or whatever" because they "can't handle" it, I understand and say "it's not for everyone" and they are being responsible by contacting rescue; instead of putting them down, dumping them, neglecting them, etc. Look at these folks for example!!!

Their stories are sometimes so amazing......... who would've thought. ;) Good to know, that little pork-chop had a caring home before. :) Say Paul - are those his nails on the last picture ? (They seem awfully long.........)

What a touching story. Pork Chop must have been awfully loved and it must have been a very hard decision that you can tell they didn't make lightly.

Wow - that's amazing that you could contact his former owners, and very reassuring that he wasn't just dumped at a shelter, or found on a country road! And yes, it appears he badly needs a nail trim?! :) (Or was that picture from his former owners??)

Yes, those were his very long nails in the picture. I took that just before he went to the vet to have them trimmed. Good eye!

By the way, I did not contact them. They contacted me.

It is nice to know that some people really try hard to do what is right, and they shouldn't feel guilty for doing what they have to. How wonderful that you can talk to them and learn about Pork Chop, and I'm sure they are thrilled that Pork Chop has such a wonderful home.

Absolutely! I'll bet they are feeling so much better now that they know he's doing well and is much loved. It certainly would ease my conscience a WHOLE LOT if I was in that situation. Did you send pictures?

Yes, and I gave them a link to Choppy's dogster page for any future updates. I add stuff to those pages almost every day!

It's really good to hear that he was loved in his previous home. There are many reasons for rescue and thank goodness it exists!

Thanks for sharing. It makes rescue seem worthwhile to know there are people like that. I'm sure it broke their heart to give Porkchop up, and they are happy to know he is in a loving home with great hooparents and lots of doxie brothers and sisters. :hug2:

 That must have been the hardest thing those people probably ever had to do. How sad is this story!!! That tatoo is too cool. I think you are awsome for even talking to the prior owners, I know alot of people that wouldn't. I think it benefits the pork chop and he's the real issue here. I'm glad he found you guys....I know I fell in love with his other picture you showed us. He is a cutie!!:hearts:
