I've always heard doxies do best in pairs?? I am contemplating getting another one and could really use some advice. Minnie is 7 months old and finally trained and settling down. I work during the day.......so should I really start all over just so she can have a companion???

Hi, I personaly think dachsies are better with a companion. They are hounds and do love canine company. Having said that there are many only dachsies out there that are perfectly happy. As you do go to work I think that having two is kinder. But I don't want to give you the wrong advice, as I have said it is only my opinion. Also your little one is well on her way to growing up so it should be the ideal time to have another. When I sell my puppies I strongly advise people to only buy one. When that one has bonded with their new family and learnt some basic manners and dare I say obedience, is a better time to get a second one. But then again there are loads of people out there who have bought two puppies together and had no problems. The trouble with dachsies is that they are adictive, it is hard to stop at just one. Let us know what you decide. Having two dacchsies is not double troubble just twice the fun and love. Dawn

I think it depends on the individual. Dogs in general are happier with their own kind, but my Annie seems perfectly content to snooze all day while I'm at work. She'd probably have a more exciting life if we had a companion for her, but I don't think she really misses canine company. (She gets an awful lot of human attention!)

I think, in general they are happier in numbers, but some will do well, or even better on their own.

I have a pair and I truly believe Rudy is happier with a companion at home while we are working. Roscoe never had to be alone and the breeder felt strongly with his personality that he should only go to a home with another dog.

Puppies are work, take up a lot of time and do cost a lot of money though. Those are things you must consider. We brought Roscoe home at 14 or 15 weeks old when Rudy was about 15 months old. I find older puppies easier to live with in my circumstances as they have to be able to hold it 4 hours at a time on workdays (but in my case the breeder had been working with them and they were well socialized too).

If you are leary of puppy training again but still want another, why not try adotping a young adult or older puppy from a rescue? There are many very good dachshund rescue groups out there.

Sometimes reputable breeders end up with young adults or older puppies too if they were intending to show them, but the dog ended up not being quite up to par for the show ring as it matured.

I LOVE having two and would never have it anyother way, but you have to decide what is best for you and yours. How does your dachsie like being around other dogs now?

I think they do better in numbers. They don't get as lonely with a friend at home. When I'm not sitting down (they are all in my lap when I do) they cuddle up with each other on the couch or bed. It is so cute! I have 3. And they are like siblings- they fight and love and cuddle and kiss.

I have often thought about getting a companion for Maximus too. However, Maximus is the most submissive dog I have ever known. He loves to play with his cainine cousins (lab, scottish terrier, and jack russell terrier), but he rolls over for all of them. Even the 6 month old jack russell terrier. Our home is the only place where he is king. I know that if I brought another dachsie into the house, Max would be beta. He loves ruling the house. Do you think that some dogs are just supposed to be single dogs? I read his horoscope once...hahaha...it also said that he should be an only dog. What do you all think?

I have 4. The oldest one, Daisy, age 4 1/2 years, would have been happier alone. She is a short hair. The others play well together but they annoy her. The others are Molly 3 1/2 years, a long hair, Jessie 1 year and 4 months,a long hair, and Frankie 8 months, a short hair. The long hairs seem much more easy going about everything.
