I've talked about this for ages, finally ordered one from Amazon. I figured it was a small investment that could pay off big if it worked out. Costs me 10.00 for each nail trim at the vet so if it works, it pays for itself after 2 months. Plus, I figure having it at home I will hopefully be more attentive to the nails than I am with bringing him to the vet to do it. I'd love for his nails to be short, short, short! I ordered the pet dremel that which uses AA batteries. We have a never ending supply of rechargeable AA's here so we should have no issues with batteries.

We've been playing around with a nail file for a while just like my vet suggested. I didn't do much with the dremel today, just tried to get him used to the noise and it touching each toe. Will try a bit more every day to see if he'll let me grind them down. I think he did really good. He squirmed a bit, bared his teeth at me a few times, but I'd just keep telling him he'd get a treat for being a good boy and he'd settle right down.

When I finished our short session, I said "Good Boy" and off he trotted to the pantry for his treat. I can just see him some day in the future flopping over on his back 50 times a day to see if I will dremel his toes for a treat!

Your vet is expensive!! Mine charges $10 for doing the nails for both little men.

I've thought about getting the Dremel. How do you know how far to grind down?? Both mine have black nails...and I can't see where the quick starts. I'm too chicken to trim them - even though I have a nail trimmer.

Oh you'll just love the dremel once you get Buddy used to it! :) His nails will be so nice and rounded and much shorter over time. I got mine a few months ago and love it. And the pups don't seem to mind it (Joey hated the clippers!).

One nice thing about a dremel is that it takes off just a little at a time (compared to trimmers which take off a chunk at a time)... which means even if you do get too close to the quick, you know right away and can stop before it bleeds. I did get too close with one of Toby's once and all I saw was a tiny red dot and so I stopped and it didn't even bleed a bit. You don't want to keep the dremel against the nail for more than a second or two because it would get the nail hot. Joey and Toby both have black nails.

Does anyone have a link to the Dremel so that we can take a look at it? Are these made for the purpose of doing the pet's nails or for other things too??

This is the Dremel that I bought....
http://www.amazon.com/Dremel-761-03-Cordless-Nail-Grooming/dp/B0000C6DZ2/sr=8-10/qid=1160512369/ref=pd_bbs_10/002-4732133-3528863?ie=UTF8

And here are some instructions on how to dremel...

Yes, pretty much everything is overpriced in this area of the country. The price of the nail trim is one reason I only take him once a month, and going that far between trimming leaves his nails longer than I would like.

Many folks here have dremels. There is this inexpensive model, a mini-might cordless which is a bit more expensive, than a more expensive corded model and TOL is a lithium rechargeable which I believe Karen owns. I figured I'd start out with the cheapo and if it works out, get hubby the lithium one to use around the house and if this one dies.

Thanks so much, Sandy. :thanx: That's a big help. I'm leaning to buying one because the nails are so much nicer when they are done this way.

This (http://homepages.udayton.edu/~merensjp/doberdawn/index.html) is the best explanation on how to dremel a dog's nails that I have ever found. :appl: :) She really explains everything down to the tiniest detail. :)

Alright after reading some of these post, I had my eye on the Pumpkin carving dremel at work (I knew it would go down in price). Got to love a sale it went from 24.99 to 75% off with my discount it was $3.75 now will I be brave and open and use this one I'm not so sure. I do have it here when I'm ready, but I wanted to post this in case others don't want to spend the $ because of doubt maybe you can look for the Halloween one and find it for a steal of a deal as I call it. The pumpkin one will go from 7,000 to 14,000 RPM (you can adjust it to either).

You're kidding, right?:faint: Our gas prices have finally come down under the $3.00 mark. We suspect it's only until the election...You know...like the credit cards and their "introductory" teaser rates! Week by week getting closer to the election we saw it drop...from 92 octane for $3.39/gal. to the current $2.95:faint: :faint: That reminds me...gotta go fill up either tomorrow, Monday or Tuesday and take advantage of the end of the 'teaser rate'.:faint:

Good luck with the dremel. Mine are not thrilled, but when I had the guillotine type trimmer, they hated it a lot more. Just do what you're doing...get him used to it, PRAISE and TREATS will help try make it a positive thing for him.
