Okay, so I did little sessions all today, I think we did 4. He is just way into it. I gave him peanut butter and at the end of the day he came over asking me for it. He relaxed so much the last time, he fell asleep on my lap. He squirms, bares his teeth and then just lays back like he knows I am going to do it anyway so why not just go with the flow. He was snoring at the end of our last session! I think my vets advice to play with his feet and the nail file for a long time before attempting to dremel really paid off.

Now, how often should I do this? Once a week? Twice a week? The quicks in his nails are fairly out there since I've only been taking him for a trim once a month. How long will it take them to recede?

At the rate we went today and how eager he was for a finger dipped in peanut butter, I think he'd let me do them every day.

His nails already look so much better. I wish I had done a before and after pic.

I want to get a dremel so badly for Ally's nails but I'm not so certain she'd tollerate it. Glad to hear you are having some success. Since I don't have experiance with the dremel I'm sure someone else will be able to tell you more about how far to go but I know when I am clipping Ally's nails I can pretty much tell how far I can go by looking at the underside of her nails. You can tell when you are getting close to the quick. It get's like a softer round spot at the tip. Am I making any sence?! Maybe not. I bet Buddy will tell you when you are getting too close too. I think they can feel it too. Congrat's on the dremel...I'm jelous!

I am so glad to hear that it is working so well for you. Just goes to show how using a dremel can really make a difference. When you go slowly that is. Most people push it to fast and then don't get such great results with out a fight. I have an old one and think it is time to get one of the easier to handle ones. The cord is a pain to work with.
Thanks for sharing your success story with us. :thanx:

I would give the quick some time to recede. Maybe do it once a week? I'm lucky that I walk so much with my girls. I haven't had to trim their nails in over a year. Just the dew claw ones.

I take Heidi to a groomer to get her nails done (mom is a big chicken!!) :scared: and the groomer has started to use the dremel on her nails with great success. Heidi like many dachsies is terribly sensitive about having her feet touched and she seems to tolerate the dremel better. The groomer actually told me last night that Heidi is the only one of her clients that she uses the dremel on - all the other dogs object to it more than the clippers. :dunno:
