View Full Version : Any special tips for a longhaired Dachsie?

My family might be getting a longhaired Dachsie (we will be unless the family backs out and decides to keep her...but hopefully they won't, as she's in an absuive situation) and I was just wondering whether I'll need any special 'tools' for grooming her? And is there anything I shouldn't use?

I already have Tango (Toller mix with a long coat) and I use a metal clmb, a slicker brush, thinning shears, regular scissors, a small clipper (for paws) and a pin brush on her. Will I need any (or all?) of those for a Dachshund? I've only ever had smooths before and can't find any specific information on the internet anywhere when it comes to grooming needs for a longhaired.

Any information would be greatly appreciated! Thanks. :)

My LH is still a puppy, and the only thing I have had to do is trim his paw hair. I simply use scissors since he stays still. I haven't had to brush him yet. But when he gets his full coat in I will get the appropriate brush that is used for de-shedding (is that the right terminology? :dunno: ). When we had shi-tzus we had a bunch of tools, but they had wayyyy more fur than LH doxies. I'm sure someone with an adult LH will pipe in shortly :)

No long haired dachsies here, but I did grow up with Afghan hounds, so I know the long hair. I think you are well prepared. Dachsies don't have an undercoat, so it shouldn't be that hard.

If she is not being groomed properly right now, you might have to shave her first and then you can groom the new hair beautifully.

I have two long hairs and all I really have to do it trim the fur on the underside of their paws, they usually fall asleep. And I watch for matts on their ears. Mine have never matted, but my mom's lh matts at his ears. Other than that, they get brushed out when they get a bath and I use a hair dryer on them.. and they usually fall asleep =P Should be a piece of cake. Keep up on their feet that's my biggest suggestion.:hearts:

Great advice given already. I just want to add that I sure hope you get her. :thanx: for trying to get her out of a bad home. When will you know if and when you get her?

My experience with longs first Aggie then Frank and Tanner is that a metal fine tooth flea comb works great for any and all areas body, tail, ears, feet. I use a small pair of ball tip scissors to trim boot hair top and bottom. Nothing fancy in general a comb once per week foot hair trim when nails are trimmed and that's about it. If you go too long between comb outs the areas you will most likely find mats developing are behind the ears and the tail.

Irminsul, I don't think she'll be too badly matted as she's only 5 months old and her coat is still growing in but I'll have to see. If she is, I'll shave her if it's really necessary but I don't really like shaving long coated dogs.

MizLara, no worries about the paws! I trim Tango's almost weekly (not that they need it quite that often, but I love the look if a tidy foot).

andy&abby, I should know for certain by tomorrow and if not then, then definitely by early Saturday sometime.

Thanks everyone!

Congrats on your new one! I hope everything works out! With Kipper I have to stay on top of his ears and tail. His ears get little matts so I usually brush them every other day. I just use one of the brushes that has the pins on one side and the brush on the other. I start with the pins to gently get the tangles and then switch over to the brush.

I take Trixie to the groomers, but in between, I brush and make sure the tangles don't get in there. If they do, then I roll them in my fingers and then I'm able to get it mostly untangled and what I can't, I cut off. Also, this winter, I will be cutting Trixie's paw hair really short, because she picked up some snowballs on her paws yesterday and they weren't fun.

Also, I read that you should never use a human hair-dryer on the pups because even at their lowest setting, it is too hot for dog skin and can burn them. If I remember the article, it said that the pet hair-dryers blow the hair rather than heat the hair.

It sounds like you have everthing you need already. I hope it all works out. Sounds like this little one needs to get to a loving home. Poor baby...only 5 months. I don't have a long hair dachie...Ally's smooth but I did have a sheltie who had that hamster hair that would get matted all the time. Thank goodness she liked to be brushed. I did it almost weekly. Keep us posed if your family adopts her...I'd love to see pictures!

Just wanted to say that we will definitely be getting her! She comes home at 6:30 this evening which is about 3 hours from now. I'll make a formal introduction thread for her either later on tonight or tomorrow sometime. :)

Thanks again for the info. Everyone on another board kept telling me that she's going to need tons of grooming (not that I'd mind, I love grooming) but I had a feeling they were wrong. Sounds pretty simple to me!

Congratulations!!!!! How exciting!!

Tammy is my first LH and she's not been a problem at all. Just regular brushing and trimming around the paws.

Yay! Congrats on the new pup!! My LH is absolutely no problem with grooming, only have to trim the paw hair and brush as everyone else has said.

I've only had my LH, Chief, for a short time, but I do have one grooming tip to add to the excellent advice you've already received. I keep the fur on the upper backs of his thighs trimmed, because...how to put this delicately....poop tends to get stuck to it if I allow it to grow out very much. It also tends to bush when it gets much length on it. Chief lies on his back while I trim this, and doesn't seem to mind at all...plus he's much neater looking and no nasty surprises stuck to his haunches :D

Congrats on your new baby.....post pics soon!!!!
