how would you introduce a dog to a cat to see if they get along?
Very carefully!!! In my experience, I let them meet gradually like through a crate or baby gate, then when they get over the initial shock and curiosity takes over, let them have a little more contact. I have never had any trouble, but cats can be so unpredictable. I usually have a little dog nose swatting going on for a few days, nothing vicious, but just letting them know that they are cats, and wish to be left alone. My cats sleep curled up with my dogs. Also, who ever is there first, the dog or the cat, will probably be the dominant one, since the new animal will be entering their territory. Good Luck!!!

Both my parents and my family introduced a cat to our dog homes this summer.
My parents adopted a 2 month old kitten from the Humane Society and had a 2 year old rescue dalmatian. The dalmatian was so nasty at first that my mother called me in tears saying they'd have to give the kitten back.
I told her to give Chloe (the dal) treats anytime she did anything even remotely positive around the cat (such as ignoring her, or looking away from her, etc.) The goal was to get Chloe to associate the cat with treats and great things. Don't scold!
My mom sat there with the treat jar all evening and by the next morning they were fine together. Now the cat chases Chloe, grabs her tail, jumps on her back, bites her feet, etc. Sometimes Chloe gets a bit rough and so my mom separates them until everybody calms down but it's usually pretty quick.
Our cat was a little over a year old when we adopted him and our dachsie was about 8 mos. old. She smelled his butt at the shelter and he didn't even glance at her. After two weeks of play bowing and yipping and showing him her tricks he finally started to play with her.
Now they wrestle and chase all over the house and Watson The Wiener Mix will go up to Felix The Cat when he's lying in front of the fire place and lay down next to him so he can groom her head. If he quits too soon she will nudge him to keep licking. He's not allowed to lick her feet though - she gets mad about that.

Our Shaddy is a 4 yr. old, 17 lb. cat who truly thinks he's a dog - because he's been raised with them since he was wks. old. He especially gets along with Rusty. They groom each other - it's like a love festhttp://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/love.gif When we brought home the last little guy poor Shaddy just gave us a look - and not a kind one either. He's always in the house or on his loooong leash in the back yard. After we brought Hobbs home, our next door neighbor phoned the next day and said, "your cat's in my yard." The following day the neighbor on the othe side also returned our Shaddy. I told Wayne that Shaddy has resorted to trying to run away so no more dogshttp://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/kfrown.gif But, he loves our guys and when it's treat time, he lines up with the rest of them - it just looks so funnyhttp://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/jacks.gif
