Has anyone bought/seen this car seat from Doxiedelights?

http://www.doxidelight.com/Catalog/console_lookout_4851244.htm

We are sort of thinking about getting it for Dragon. Any thoughts on if it is actually safe since its up front? I think he'd love to sit between us like that, but safety is the first concern.

:thanx:

I got the oversized lookout for my boys to share, but I did find a site last night that sells them for less.

If you can not turn off your passenger side airbag or if the passenger side airbag is not weight activated *DO NOT* put yout dog in the front seat. Air bag deployment will most likely kill your dog if they are in a car seat. If you have ever seen anyone, human, who has been in an airbag accident, you will know that it is not gentle. While it can save an adults life.. it does cause injuries that can be fatal to infants and small dogs.

I have two of the carseats. One regular and one oversize. They are the second row seat of my van and my furkids love them.

As said do NOT use in the front seat unless you can turn off the airbag.

The one in my car turns off, and fiances car is old, and doesnt even have one. Besides that I dont even want to ride in his car, so I really dont want Dragon to! He's done way too much stuff to it for racing ugh, and I find it scary and loud. :irked:

What about the driver side though? I can turn off the passenger one, but I dont know about the driver side one, and Dragon would be in the center. :dunno:

I have one of the Oversized Lookouts, not from there shhhhhh.... I got it cheaper! :) Buddy's resides in the middle row captain's chair of my Yukon XL when he is in it - no one but adults in the front even though I can turn air bags off and they are also weight activated.

We love ours. I bought the one with the drawer in it and store his bowls, a bottle of water, food and snacks in it when we travel.

Not exactly the smartest location for the lookout in that ad......

I bought a lookout when I was going on a trip. If they're already used to being "free" or in your lap while driving, it's hard to keep them in. Just make SURE they are in a comfortable harness and not a collar when you hook them to the seatbelt. I guess that's a big "duh", but should be said.

I got one at Improvements, that sits high, but has restraints all around, but can be either rolled down, or unzipped. It sits on top of a suitcase, and has a hook to hook onto their harness. There is a zipper on the side of the suitcase base, so you can just slip their toys, bowl, water bottle, etc when riding. The front mesh rolls down and velcros to keep it in place, I usually keep the side mesh zipped up, particularly if no one is in the backseat with them. It is big enough that with a double coupler, I can put both Coco and Chanel in the one seat. It's great, I spent some money on it, but it's probably the best investment I made. Also has wheels, so if I'm traveling by air with them, I can make it the airline carry on, it's small enough to fit the standards.

In addition to the airbags, another thing to consider is if you brake hard, pupper might go flying into the windshield....

Personally I feel the safest place for any dog in a car is inside a crate that is secured with a seatbelt. If you really want to use a car seat though my suggestion would be that it be in the back seat. Dragon is young enough still that you should be able to train him to accept that. One other word of caution on the carseats if you have a doggie who loves to roll around on their back... watch to make sure they do not get wound up in the seat belt. I used to use the Lookout Car seats and almost lost Merry this way. She is a roller and got the seatbelt tightly wrapped around her torso. If I had not reached over in the dark to check on her when I did she would have been dead by the time we got home.

I actually have one that's from PetCo I think. By Outward Bound? It cost me $40, and its "ok". I needed something quick and some-what cheap and it did the trick. But now that I have two dachsies, I need (ok, want) one that can hold both of them.

I have a carseat for Mocha, but it doesn't look like that. I like the one in your post better. I brought Mocha's from a place called Care-A-Lot-Pets in VA. I always put Mocha in the backseat because airbags can tear a person up, so I would imagine it would fatally injury or kill a small dog.

I have the "Outward Hound" one as well. Its the big one that sits on an inflateable base. I drive a 1969 Volks Baja so no airbags (actually I had to add seatbelts!) - it sits in the front and is suspended from the roof as well as strapped to the seat. Pipmeister can look out the window/windshield and see everything yet still be safely belted in. He loves it! :D

I have a Lookout and we put it in the middle of the back seat strapped with a seat belt. Only strap them in with a harness. Honestly on a long trip when you are going 70-75 miles an hour--think what can happen to pup if you brake real fast?? I think they are ok in light traffic, or country roads but heavy traffic even in a harness they could be thrown all over. The safest is a kennel strapped with a seat belt.

This may make me sound cheap, but I just checked out that website and I'm pretty sure I could make the harnesses if I saw a pattern. Does anyone know of anyplace in the midwest that sells patterns for things like that? Maybe a website?
The dreamsacks are fairly obvious and I'm hitting the fabric store today, but the harnesses look a little more complicated. I'd like to be able to restrain Buffy and Tucker behind me, (she tries to drive and I can't see over her little head), but while they're not alot of money, for a single mom, it's a little pricey when I can whip out the machine and zip it up in a few minutes.
I only take my babies with me to pick the kids up at school and such. We never get on the highway unless we're heading for the vet and then they're crated. It would be nice to be able to turn a corner without Buff spinning around on the steering wheel on those short trips though.

Which harnesses are you talking about?? Most of us here are making the hug-a-dog harness. I have been for almost 2 years.

I think thats what I'm talking about. The ones you can attach a seatbelt to. I know the store bought harness of the nylon leash/collar material don't fit Buffy right, or perhaps I'm just challenged when it comes to adjusting them.
I thought this could be a solution, plus keep her more controlled in the van, (not on the steering wheel or under the brake pedal). I don't take her alone anymore. She's such a wild child I'm afraid she'll cause an accident.

I bought a couple of the originals a few years ago and then made my own pattern that we are all sharing around DBB. I keep making changes to the pattern to make it easier to sew.

Oh, those are too cute. I think I might be able to pull it off just from the photos. I usually make my own patterns as well. Do they have zip closures or some kind of strap or velcro? I absolutely love the whole skirt idea. I think it would be fairly easy to attach a band to hook a seatbelt through as well.

They are closed by velcro at the bottom and on the neck sometimes velcro with a buckle like a collar has, and I just started overlaping mine and sewing the front together like a slip over.

Thank you very much. I'm off to the craft store. I'm doing the first in scrap fabric just for practice. Boy I sure can have fun with this and add a strap for seatbelt too.

I just noticed that you're in sierra vista. My ex and oldest grown daughter and grandbabies all live up there. It's a small world.

Go to Walmart and go into their remnats. Go to the Dollar store and get their collars and leashes that will get you the D-ring, strapping for the D-Ring and the collar gives you the strapping for the neck. You will also get the buckle from the collar. I also use med-light pellon-iron in between my layers of the harness--makes it sturdier.

Irma that harness dress (pink, yellow, brown, circles) is my very favorite that I've seen so far. I love that fabric! Petunia must look gorgeous in it!!! I don't know how I missed this thread. Maybe I wasn't home that day?!

where did you find your car seats for the puppies? Petsmart seems to be the one not to go to.

You'll be better off with the kind you can hold on to the car seat with the seatbelt. I have two in my car, and carry the kids in them all the time. The first time I put them in the seat belt was not tight enough. I turned the corner and there goes the seat sliding, with the dog falling off. You do not want this to happen.
