:candle: He will forever live in our hearts and memories. :candle:

He was my other eyes that could see above the clouds;
my other ears that heard above the winds.
He was the part of me that could reach out into the sea.
He had told me a thousand times over that I am his reason for being:
by the way he rested against my leg;
by the way he thumped his tail at my smallest smile;
by the way he showed his hurt when I left without taking him.

When I was wrong, he was delighted to forgive.
When I was angry, he clowned to make me smile.
When I was happy, he was joy unbounded.
When I was a fool, he ignored it.
When I succeeded, he bragged.

He was loyalty itself. He has taught me the meaning of devotion.

With him, I knew a secret comfort and a private peace.
He had brought me understanding where before I was ignorant.

His head on my knee could heal my human hurts.
His presence by my side was protection against my fears of dark and
unknown things.

He has promised to wait for me...whenever...wherever - in case I need him.
And I expect I will - as I always have.

A :candle: to light Daytona's journey to the Bridge.

Sophie and I are very sad to hear of your loss. Daytona was such a handsome gentle giant, and a good big brother to your little Maissie. I always loved seeing pics of him playing with your other babies. He is now being restored to full health and he is an energetic pup again, ready to run and play with all his friends at the Bridge. Just thing of those big giant Great Dane kisses that will be waiting for you when you are reunited at the Bridge.

How much do you want to bet that he is up there now just covered in dachsies? :D

A :hug2: for you and Maisie and Tessa and Rodney. I know they will miss their big brother, just as you will miss your big baby.

I think that Daytona is an honorary doxie... I'm so so sad for you Sabine. His time here was too short. May memories comfort you during this difficult time, and the knowledge that he is happy & healthy & running free with all of his animal friends, large and small. :hug2: :hug2:

Thank you all for your kind words. We miss the old boy terribly, but his condition (DCM) was getting worse and he could barely breath anymore. We thought it was the kindest thing to let him go - as hard as that decision was, we owed it to him. Daytona was a wonderful friend and therapy dog, who achieved success with "his" patients where human therapists failed. He was an award winning show-dog and had character and temperament to die for. He was a true gentle giant and no other dog will ever be able to replace him.

He peacefully fell asleep in my arms ...........

What a special boy and now heaven has a new angel - he really earned his wings :angel: ! I can't read the poem just yet, I'll read it at home and no one will notice the tears. I am so glad you got to hold him as he passed to the bridge. Many :rayz: :rayz: :rayz: :rayz: to heal your heart and a few :candle: :candle: :candle: (he was a gentle giant and they need more candles) to light his way. May God bless you!!

Daytona was a wonderful dog who gave so much to so many people, and I know you must just be heart-sick over his loss at such a young age. You have had to make the most difficult decision about his life and you did the most self-less thing - ease his pain and let him run free. I know he is deeply missed :bighug: and he knew that he was loved from the bottom of your heart. :candle:

Thanks Pam and Brooke :hug2: I still expect him to lay on his sofa or outside on the patio......... but he isn't. I haven't had the heart yet to tell his friends at the nursing home that he is gone. They keep asking for him and I don't know how to tell them. Some of the residents have known him for years and even though their memory is failing, most of them remember the big guy. He was special !! :hearts:

What a sweet pic of Daytona at work with his patients. I know how difficult it will be to tell them about his passing. He's now up at the Bridge still doing his therapy work. His job is to show the doggies who went to the Bridge mistreated or unloved here on earth what love is all about. That's what the extra special and loving dogs do there and I bet he's doing an excellent job. :angel:

I dont know if you saw my earlier post, but a donation was made to Emerald Coast Great Dane Rescue in Daytona's name. Sophie and I paid them a visit last week and fell in love. :hearts: Now some other gentle giants will get some of the care that they need.
