http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/biggrin.gif Yesterday, while at Petsmart with Timber, I saw a a beautiful smooth double dapple. I overheard that the doxie came from a doxie rescue. That made me think. I thought that would make for a very enjoyable career. Do you make much money? I am not doing it for the money, but, of course, it is something that you should consider. Can someone give me any pointers on this? Thanks alot!

You can probably find some information at www.drwp.net (http://www.drwp.net)

I don't know much about being involved in rescue but I think its a volunteer thing, that you don't make any money.

Hi Timber,

There are alot of rescue folks on this board, so I am sure they can give you even more information. Here's my take. I recently joined the DRNA(Dachshund Rescue of North America), and had the same questions you did. At first I thought, what a rewarding career that would be. I found though that most of the rescue work is volunteer based, and many are non profit, so even if there were paying positions within a particular organization, the pay would be low at best.

I have only been involved about two months, and it is basically what you make of it. You can be as involved as you want to be. I will have my first transport this week and I am so nervous!

I am sure you will get more responses as I have found many of the frequent members on this board on the rescue sites. They are very dedicated people, so I trust their advice.

Good Luck. Feel free to email me privately if you have any other questions. Hans_bean@yahoo.com

Also, being involved in rescue doesn't mean that all the problems are dumped into your lap. You can do things to help as your time & finances allow:

Checking your local animal shelters for dogs that need help (esp ones due to be destroyed) & notifying the breed rescue person in your area of the situation.

Doing home inspections, checking out prospective homes, families & situations; checking on a previously-rescued dog to see how it is fitting in with the family.

Transporting dogs from rescue site to a foster home, or from a foster home to a new forever home, etc, the whole way, or as part of a relay.

Finanicial donations, or donations of needed items from the rescue organization's wishlist.

Updating & maintaining the rescue website.

Organizing rummage sales & silent auctions for the benefit of the rescue organization, including soliciting merchandise from local businesses.

Fostering a dog or multiple dogs, short-term or long-term.

There's always SOMETHING you can do. Unfortunately, you are ALWAYS needed.

No, you don't make any money. Hoping hubby is not behind me. We are all volunteers barely scraping enough money at the end of the year to pay the bills. I always hear 175.00 for a rescue dog!!! I have spent upwards of 800.00 on one dog and sometimes I spend about 400.00 on a heartworm treatment and then they don't make it....Mickey and Minnie. I don't pass these costs onto DRNA because that would kill our budget. Like Heather said...you can be as active as you want to be. If you need info I would be glad to help.

Timber, no money--this is what you do in your "spare" time!! http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/lol.gif http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/lol.gif Hahahahaha!

But as someone who has only been involved for a couple of months and am now up to my neck, lemme tell ya: It is VERY rewarding! And you can definitely limit your involvement to fit the time you can afford to devote to it.

Transport is ALWAYS needed! How do you like driving?

Timber--nope, no money. But I love it. I do transport; you pay for your own gas. If you rescue on your own (not backed by a org.) they you pay all costs. We need people to help with pulling dogs from shelters and accepting dogs from private owners . . . oh, and driving them to either their foster or forever homes. You do not need to do anything you cannot do. I cannot foster (I have a houseful already) but will drive and do homechecks and occasionally have dogs stay overnight when they are on their way somewhere else.

I love doing this! I do it for two breeds and wouldn't change a thing. Feel free to ask any questions you need to: we're here to help.

Hi Timber! I'm a DRNA volunteer as well. Notice I said "volunteer". The pay you get is that wonderful feeling of saving that unwanted, abandoned, or abused pup and placing him/her in her forever home. It is very rewarding and no one asks you to do more than you can. Please let me know if you have any questions. We would love to have another dachshie lover to help us find these babies and get them out of harms way!

Hi there Timber:
You will get nothing but the best advice on this BB about rescue. Experienced dedicated people hang out here.
In addition I would recomend you go to http://www.egroups.com and take a peak at Rescue101@egroups.com. It is specifically designed as a tutorial for those interested in becoming involved. It is made up of "old timers" who are willing to share experience and information on all aspects of rescue. It is not a place to list dogs, look for transportation or any of those needs. The people respresent all breeds, national associations or local organizations and are from all over the country.
It will also give you a good idea of how deep people go into their own pockets to save needy pets. Unfortunately, no matter where you are in the country, there are always more animals needing help than those willing to rescue. http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/sad.gif
The very best to you,
Roxane

Thanks for all the help! I can't transport[ only 12 yr.]! I barely have enough money now that I have little Timber[ if you pass a dog supply catalog to me, I could find a million things in there to get Timber]. I'll still thimk about it, though......

Hi Timber, it is nice to know that at your age you are thinking about saving the world, one dachsie at a time...

Keep in mind that you can still spread awareness, fundraising, or even having an awareness table a t a local event. It might be worth it to enlist the help of an older relative who might share your intentions, and go from there. There are alot of ways to help the dachsie's of the world, and in my opinion, education is at the top of the list.
