wow! just checked out a few rescue/adoption sites, can't believe how many are listed for florida. i check our local pound frequently, we don't seem to get them here very often and at our local shelter, most dogs are adopted, in 1999, none were put down, all were placed. i guess this is unusual from what i have been reading. have sent my info to a couple of rescue organizations, and am looking forward to becoming more involved in rescueing these little sweeties. so far i haven't found any rescue contacts listed for the panhanle area, most are in the central and keys area of the state.

Hi WCP:
I think you would be of tremendous value to any organization you join, since there seems to be a lack of representation in the Panhandle. Both Shelley and Andrea can fill you in on members of their organizations who might be near you.
I found the same problem where I am and am working to form a communications network, a long slow process.
May I recommend you take a peek at Dachshund Rescue posted by Timber? The egroup I recommended to her might be of interest to you, too.
Keep us posted on your progress, we are glad you are here http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/pink.gif

You could do a search on "(City) Humane Society" or "(County) Humane Society", too, & see what comes up.
You can also look in http://www.anywho.com & do a business search. Just don't put too much info, or it will skip. Be sure to check the Advanced Search, where you can be more particular. Some Humane Societies try to get fancy with their names & don't use either the nearest city OR the county, but call it something cute like Border Counties H.S. or Tri-Counties H.S.
Once you find them, try to set up a liason with them, where they will contact Rescue if they get a dog in. Many places will do this, but some seem to think they will lose their power or something (or they're selling the dogs on the side).
