Hey all,

It's been a long while since I've posted, and I thought I'd let those of you who know about our rescue, Larry, know how he's doing now that he's been with us for almost 6 months. Now that we've *cross your fingers* gotten his worms all cleared up, he's finally put on some weight and no longer has the prominent hip bones he had when we first got him. In fact, I just cut him back from 1/3 cup to 1/4 cup servings (twice a day) since he is even starting to look a tad chunky! We finally settled on Solid Gold Just a Wee Bit for his food--which he LOVES LOVES LOVES--and he and Maisy both get Solid Gold SeaMeal as a supplement.

Larry is still a good Southern Baptist ;) and protests if the kids start dancing, but he's gotten much better about growling and barking at them and now only does it when they dance or startle him.

His gum disease appears to be improving, and his gums are looking much better (his extractions have fully healed) and his breath is finally losing that odd fishy smell, which is great because one thing Larry looooooves to do is give me kisses! I just want to take a minute here and encourage everyone to practice some kind of dental care with their dogs--dry food alone is NOT enough! Either brush their teeth regularly and/or give them rawhide chews or dental bones regularly. This is so important to their overall health and well-being!

Despite being told that Larry wasn't potty trained, he very, very quickly learned how to use the litterbox and rarely has accidents. He's even better at it than Maisy!

He and Maisy are good pals, but it is very clear that I am the love of Larry's life. I have never had a dog who was so devoted to me ever in my whole life. It is really something, and I think it is a trait that is common among rescue dogs--it's as though they know how good they have it and they are grateful beyond belief!

For anyone thinking of adopting a rescue, I strongly recommend it. We took Larry in knowing very little about him, and he has turned out to be one of the most wonderful dogs I've ever owned.

We are also glad Larry is better and hope to see photos soon :hearts: :hug2: :hearts:
How did you come up with the name " Larry ". I used to have a "Ernie" Ernie burnie after the show "my 3 sons".

That is AWESOME!! Great to hear he is doing so good.

I definately plan on our second dachsie being a rescue. We tried for a few months before we got Dragon, but I got impatient and saw that little face.... :faint: Now I feel like I have plenty of time to pick out his bro or sis, and I'm so excited to get a rescue pupper! Thanks for the update on your little sweetie!

I love hearing happy stories . Larry sounds very happy and has the life he deserves . I deffently agree adopting a rescue pup is worth all the time and effort you put into them and what you get back is inmesurable .

Heehee....I knew everyone was going to want pictures! Unfortunately, my USB cord has been missing since Christmas (I think it accidentally got thrown away) and I just haven't gotten around to getting a new one yet. You all won't believe how much Maisy has grown! For those of you who haven't seen Larry before, here's an older pic of him, about a month or so after we got him (you can click on it to make it bigger):

I think of this one as his "Put down the camera and let me give you some kisses!" picture. :)

Regarding Larry's name, he came with the name Laredo, which got shortened to Larry. We didn't think about it all that much, but a lot of people think it is very funny. (Plus it lends itself well to rhyming....he's been known as Hairy Larry, Scary Larry, and Wary Larry at different times!)

Thank you for this wonderful update! I know it takes patience and even courage to adopt a dog you know little to nothing about but as as stated they are so grateful and devoted and seem to understand that you are helping them to a better life. Larry is a special boy and I am so glad he has captured your heart! I also cannot agree more about the dental care. I get in so many ex breeder dogs who have totally rotten teeth. Even from supposed reputable breeders who make big claims about how they care for their dogs. It's just sad and the dogs really suffer and can even have long term health issues from the damage done. It does not take long to clean your dogs teeth. I clean 8-10 mouths every bath time and it's very worth it. If you are unable to do this yourself there are Vets and also some great doggy dental hygenists who do an awake cleaning. I have some contacts if anyone needs one of those. They are sadly mostly west coast but if anyone knows such a person on the east coast or midwest I would love to compile a list and post it on my site to help others take proper care of their fur friends. :hug2:
