Me and my girlfriend are buying a house and definitely want dogs. I want a dachshund and she wants a boxer. Both will be from a rescue or shelter. It seems that having 2 dogs won't be a problem. We have always wanted 2 dogs, so here is the question. Would it be better to get the larger dog first or the smaller dog first. Or, and I know not everyone agrees to this, would it be ok to get them together. I would rather start with the smaller dog and then get the larger dog in a couple of months. Just looking for an opinion from you experienced owners. Thanks again for all of the help.
Hi Mark,
I don't think in getting one at a time that it matters which comes first. There is no way to predict their temperaments. I do strongly recommend, however, that (if possible) the second dog be introduced to the first a few times on neutral ground before bringing him/her to the house or yard.
Also here is a great site about having 2 dogs in a household; http://www.doggiedoor.com/twodogs.shtml
Good luck & please do keep us posted,
Mark

Well I have a pair of dachsies, so I can't really comment on getting a larger or smaller dog first. It seems to me though that larger dogs are often more accepting of smaller dogs than smaller dogs are of larger ones, but every dog is different.
I agree on the neutral territory introduction. I took Rudy with me to the breeders when we were getting Roscoe. They Played together there, and then we brought him home. I also took them into our backyard for some more getting acquainted time, where they had room to sniff eachother out and do their things before bringing them into the house together. I really thing that helps.

Hi Mark,
I have Dachshunds and Dalmatians. I had the Dachshunds first. I don't think it matter whether you get the big or little dog first. But definitely introduce them slowly and on neutral territory.....park, neighbors yard, etc. I think the main thing is to make sure you don't get 2 dominant dogs that might be prone to fight. That would be true even if you got 2 doxies. Good Luck!!!

Personally, I think it is hard to get two at once if they are both puppies.....harder for potty-training...especially if they are from the same litter.....but if you are looking at older dogs....I don't see a problem...especially if you get them from rescue organizations where they have been fostered....that way you have an idea of temperament.
