I made yesterday some homemade dog treats. I discovered the recipe on a German dog page. It is really simple and Maxwell loves them.

You need

-500gr VERY lean ground beef (organic meat is great but regular grocery meat is fine too)
-2 organic eggs
-750 ml organic whole wheat flour
-250 ml organic oats ( I used oatmeal)
-250 ml water

- Mix the beef and the eggs until everything is smooth. If you have an blender it will go allot faster
-In another bowl mix the flour and the oats
-Then blend the dry and the meat mix all together and add the water.
-sprinkle some flour on a very clean working place and role the dough out. Make sure that the dough doesn't get to flat. ( I made a few cookies to flat and they burned a little) maybe 6-12 mm
-you can use cookie cutter but if you don't have so much time then just use a pizza cutter and cut little/medium squares.
-I used a pizza cutter and it worked well.
-put the cookies on a very lightly greased baking sheet ( i used a tiny bit of olive oil on the cookie sheets)
- oven temperature is 180C which is around 350 Fahrenheit.
-bake 45 to 1 hour. (the recipe said 1 hour but it depends how thin or thick your cookies are.
-let them cool completely and serve.
- Make sure you check for to dark/burned ones. They will taste very bitter and I would throw these away.
-DONT FORGET DO WASH YOUR HANDS GOOD BECAUSE YOU HANDLED RAW MEAT AND CLEAN EVERYTHING THAT CAME IN CONTACT WITH THE RAW MEAT VERY GOOD

Oh i forgot something. Store them in a cookie box ( metal is best) and close the lid tightly and they are supposed to last for 2-3 weeks.

I'm a little psycho about food safety. I fully intend to make these up, just wanted to be sure I wasn't the only one on earth putting my dog biscuits in the fridge, lol.

It is actually very good because now they are much more crunchy when they are stored in the fridge. So PUT THEM DEFIANTLY IN THE FRIDGE:Sun2:

When I make homemade treats I always keep some in the frig and then freeze the rest.

This recipe sounds like the pups would love it! I'll have to make some!

It's good to know I'm not as crazy as I thought I was. At least about this, lol

All I realy do and the pups love it is, buy a boneless chicken breast, a small steak, a piece of liver, always rinse it, then I cut it real thin and small, put on a cookie sheet and put in a 250 degree oven, over night, and you will have jerky. Liver weill smell out your house but they love it.

I am considering purchasing a dehydrator to make jerky for the dogs. A friend of mine bought one in a yard sale for $5 and makes jerky from london broil (marinated ) for all of us at work. It's yummy. I would just do meats and poultry with nothing on it for the dogs. I'm sure they would love it and it's all natural!!!

Stacicakes I used to make my own jerky, dried apples, banana chips and they were all yummy. I have a dehydrator, but using a cookie sheet and putting it in the oven on 250 overnight works just as well.

Irma I don't know how well I would sleep with the oven on all night...I'm a little paranoid! About how many hours?....I could do it during the day while I'm home and awake. :D Also how thin are you cutting the meat?

10-20 hrs. get it in the oven as soon as you wake up in the morn then by bed time it should be ok. i wouldn't waste my money on a dehydrater unless you use it a lot.

I think I'm going to try and make some jerky this week so I can have it for my meetup next Sunday. Does it have to be refrigerated after it's cooked or can I just store it in a ziploc bag?

I would ziploc and refrigerate.
