Well, we just got back from Vt. We took Coco and Chanel with us to Rutland, VT from Tues-Thurs. The inn we stayed at, the Paws House, was terrific, we felt really at home. The dogs stay right in the room with us, and the only place they aren't allowed in the house is the dining room at breakfast. They have a playhouse for the pups, with kennel runs, and you leave them in there while you have breakfast. They have a tv in there, with Animal Planet always playing. Coco and Chanel loved it. They also have a fenced in off leash area with agility equipment, I would have tried it out, but it was quite muddy due to the severe storm they had had only the day before.

I would highly recommend it to anyone. Mitch, the owner, couldn't have been more gracious, and his employee Bethany was very sweet. She just loved all the dogs.

The website for this inn is http://www.pawhouseinn.com/directions.html

This place looks great!!!!! I keep bookmarking all the pet friendly places I find. Someday I plan to buy a motorhome and travel across the U.S. and visit them all! That's my dream vacation. Thanks for sharing!!!:Sun2:

The great thing is that Mitch is talking about franchising the idea. He is also expanding his place in Rutland. He is going to have 4 or 5 cabins in the back part of the lot, and he would expand the Playhouse to accommodate 4-5 more families of dogs. The cabins would be great for those who have larger, or more dogs, that might be too much for the inn rooms. The rooms are nice, but not huge, very comfortable for us with 2 dachshies, but I wouldn't want two labs in that room. The cabins would also be great for those with noisier dogs. We were awoken by 2 standard poodles that barked when they wanted to go out in the morning. It didn't bother me, I'm an early riser, but it might bother some.

All in all it's a great idea. I hope he succeeds.

If you are an AAA member, their books list hotels that are pet friendly. We travel all over with Buddy. He's even stayed in non pet hotels - shhhh!!! :)

We've stayed at The Paw House Inn in VT back in 2005. We enjoyed it. I did a search and I found the Lazy Dog Inn in New Hampshire.

I liked the Lazy Dog better because the "doggy inn" was much nicer then The Paw House.
But, the Paw House had a bigger fenced area.

I'd like to try the Paw House again since when we were there is was terribly rainy for 2 of the 4 days.

Glad you enjoyed it! Isn't the breakfast great?!?

Jill,
Yes the breakfast was terrific, I will have to check out the other Inn you mentioned, whereabout in NH is it? I didn't realize you lived in MA, where are you, do you belong to the Boston Dachshund Meetup group, if not, why not join us, we have a great time. John, our organizer, is great. We meet at the Boston Common from April to Nov, skip Dec because of the busy holiday season, and meet Jan-March in Salem, MA at a doggy day care.

Our group has almost reached 300 members, the 3rd largest dachshund meetup group in the world. We had 69 members at last Saturday's meetup.
We have a few from this bulletin board as members.

Let me know if you are interested and I'll get you in contact with the group.

So, for those of you that have stayed at the Paw House Inn, did you like the surrounding area? Were there any lakes for swimming? What are the nearby towns like? Thanks.

The only lake is Lake Champlain, quite a way north. The Paw House is actually in Rutland, very quaint town, lovely area, right in the middle of the mountains. Absolutely beautiful area of Vt. Dog Mt is about 2 1/2 hrs away, and between Rutland and Dog MT is Ben & Jerry's and the Cabot Cheese Annex Store right on Rt 100. Also right on Rt 7 is Shelburne Museum and the Vermont Teddy Bear Company. These things are quite a ride from Rutland, but a very nice ride, very picturesque. If it's seashore you want, this is not the area to go in. Again, if you go to VRBO (link in my previous e-mail) there is quite a listing of dog friendly places in all areas.

For those looking for a place further south, Marl Inn B&B is great and dog friendly. It is in Yorktown, VA. EVERYTHING is within 1 mile walking distance and there is a beach for the York River. It is not far from Williamsburg and Jamestown. The whole area is celebrating its 400th anniversary. You can bring the dogs to the battlefields, the walking tour, etc.

The food is great, the rooms are inexpensive and they have a yard that has a low fence but I would't leave my dog out there unattended. The owners have an overweight dachsie (since she was spayed she gained gained gained but I gave him some helpful weightloss hints) and a black lab and 2 cats.

EXCELLENT breakfast!
