Hi. I grew up with a really terrific dauhsund. She was all brown and the "usual" sized. (Is this called standard?) Anyway, after I move out of this apartment with my boyfriend into a great house I would love to get a pair of "standard" dachsunds. What I am asking is: are 2 females best or are 2 males the best.

IMHO, the best situation would be a spayed female and a neutered male. Same sex situations can result in fights.

My suggestion is to get them one at a time rather than as littermates. Littermates are not for the novice dog owner, they are 10 times the work of a single pup. They are great in theory, but in practice, unless you map it out before hand (plans for crate training, obedience training etc) you're going to shocked at how difficult littermates are. Here is a link to another board. This person and her friend both got littermates and are now regretting it. http://dachshundzone.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/001291.html
Also, standards are hard to find these days. I have one, but found him through rescue as a 10 month old and wasn't really looking for a standard. I just lucked out. What you really need to do, starting now, is visiting AKC shows in your area. Meet breeders and get their recommendations of where to get your pup. If you're really sold on littermates, please consider rescue. THere are many bonded pairs out there that need homes, though it will be a bit tough to find a pair of standards. Here is a page where you get an idea of the dogs that need homes http://drwp.net/needhome.html
Best of luck to you!!
One last quick thing... I strongly warn you off two female littermates. I have friends with male littermates and they get along fine, a TON of time was also invested in their training.

I was wondering if that might be an option as well. Do I wait until I have the first one trained? And which sex do you suppose would be the best to buy first?
Thanks- Judy

If you want a male and a female I'd start with a female. They tend to be the alphas and, in my opinion, it's better to start with one, then add a male after you've finished potty training, a puppy obedience class and have her spayed. :D

Again, take this time right now to meet reputible breeders. Don't buy your puppy from a store or from a newspaper ad. Reputible breeders want to prescreen you and make sure that you are a commited life long owner for their dogs.

Decision decisions! First, do you want a puppy or an adult? That lets us know where to start. Then, do you want rescue or reputable breeder referral? Many breeders have retired adults that they will sometimes wish to place but you might want something younger than what they have available and that 'might' be available in rescue. EAch has their positive points and their negative points - rescue versus breeder that is.
If you want a puppy, dachshund clubs have breeder referral contacts as well as a national referral contact and there dfwdachshund.com has a questionnaire you can access for questions to ask a breeder as well as questions you should expect to BE asked (so that you won't be surprised <g>).
As wireweiners knows, MY personal preference is always a neutered boy (having a variety of sexes - meaning whole and neutered/spayed). ALWAYS one at a time - get it trained to the house routine first and bonded to y'all and THEN get the next one. SOOOOOOOOOOO much easier on the training for the first and 1/2 as much training time onthe 2nd one:)
