Hey Guys and Dolls,

My dog Max, actually Porthos Maximus, is a black and tan miniature dach that is short haired, but not smoothed like my other dach. His hair is about an inch long and he sheds all the time and it has gotten worse since spring/summer has begun. Any tips on what I can do, my wife even mentioned shaving poor Max or even keeping him outside:(

Any and all advice would be appreciated..........

There is a product sold at Petsmart that is supposed to stop excessive shedding. I've never checked the label so I don't know what it is but it might be worth a try. Also you could try one of those grooming gloves. They are a reasonable price and I've seen the hair it gets off my neighbour's hairy GSD. It is just a plastic-palmed glove with little nubbies that catch loose hair as you pet the dog.

I find that a good bath helps, too. Frankie has all sorts of special shampoos, conditioners, soaps and vitamins for his itchy hives and they slowed down the shedding. You could always ask your vet for suggestions.

Good luck

Sue

Don't bathe him too often. Once a month is plenty unless he gets into something stinky. When you do bathe him use a moisturizing shampoo made for dogs. Human shampoos are too harsh for dogs. Try adding a little oil to his food. I like the fish oil capsules from Sam's Club that are marketed for humans. One or two capsules will do for a mini dachs. A daily brushing with a grooming glove or horsehair or sisal brush will help remove loose hair. You can do this outside to avoid a mess.

GEE guess I'm a BAD doggy Mom as I have been bathing my Longhaired Show Doxies in Kids Pert Plus for YEARS and I use Flex Conditioner before a SHOW. BAD MOM!!!! Oh I also use Bio-Groom Harsh Coat on my Longs and we give them the same Omega 3 caps from Sam's Club

I have always been told that human shampoos were too harsh but I can't argue with success. I use the biogroom harsh coat on my wires before a show. I use a shampoo called filthy animal (can't remember the manufacturer) for regular baths and baths after a field trial. It has tea tree oil and some other stuff that seems to sooth the nicks and scratches they pick up after a trial. I use the biogroom black shampoo on my b&t smooth before shows.

Got stopped at the last shows we were at by someone wanting to know "What use use on your dogs they look WONDERFUL" Well as it turned out the Black & Tam Mini male they were asking about was not mine I had to pick him and a puppy bitch up to show for the owner who was very ill but I bathed and groomed both of them. Anyhow when I took them back to the owner she was so excited about the way they looked. I had just done them in harsh coat and Flex plus trimmed them up.Now as I was explaining what I used and how I discovered that harsh coat is to be deluited Well I have NEVER deluited it I have ALWAYS just put a line of shampoo down the back straight from the bottle.People now say " Maybe that is WHY your dogs shine so much" Hey it maybe WRONG but it WORKS!!!!! Ha,Ha:dizzy:

I have heard from several people they give there dogs peanut butter everyday. Just a small amount. Then 2X a year they take them off it for about a week. The hair starts to shed alot, but at least it isn't for the whole year.
I guess after having a sheltie for 12 years my doxies and cats together don't come close to that mess.
:caffeine: But please don't put him outside, beg your wife, do the dishes, what ever it takes. LOL
My doxies would have a fit if they had to stay outside if we wouldn't be out there too! Unlesss they where loose to explore the whole neighborhood. But I do worry about dogs outside. You never know what will happen to them. Or how others in the area will feel about a dog barking or howling.
I have shaved my longhairs in the past because when we camp the burs have been a big problem. Plus the one that doesn't like getting brushed is much happier because of it. She has a double thick long coat.
I have had to use shampoo's from the vet on my smooth std blk&tan. The others get baths when they need them. With dog shampoo's only. People shampoo's can have the wrong PH levels for dogs.
Good Luck!

Pam you know the kitchen spray is the Field Trialers friend if you have Longs.I'm not with my dogs in the Field like Carol Smith and I have seen some dogs get burred up Good but I spray the dogs BEFORE they get in the burrs and they come out quick.Me I would NEVER shave a long makes a MESS of their coat but to each his own.
