Wild boar is the same genetically as red sable. From what breeders have told me, red sable is the correct term for longhairs and wild boar is the correct term for wirehaired or smooth dachshunds with this coloring. I would guess it is most common in wires when compared to smooths and longs.
wild boars and red sables will have black overlay on most of their body. They will be red at the base of the hairshafts and black on the tips of the hair. From a distance they might easily be mistaken for a black and tan because there is that much black overlaying the red. Hope that helps!

And then again, you may have been told the wrong color :) What coat variety do you own? Can you describe the color? What color are the ears? What color is the undercoat?
I have wirehairs, two wild boars and one black and tan. The wild boars, although mother and son, are very different to my eyes. The mother is very very dark when longer, but when stripped is very reddish all over. The son on the other hand is very dark when long but when stripped is very evenly grizzled or boared. When both were born (yes I bred his mother, too <g>) they appeared to be black and tans for about 2 hours and then you could tell they weren't true black and tans.
If these are not longhairs, can you describe the cream's coloration for me? If it is a longhair, no description is necessary :)
