I only know anything AKC. Apparently there are a few others out there.

What is CKC? Do they have events like AKC?

Who is your dog registered with?

There are two CKCs. One is the Canadian Kennel Club, the Canadian counterpart to AKC.

The American CKC, is the Continental Kennel Club. You can regsiter anything there and get a piece of paper. All you need to do to register a dog with the Continental KC is pay the fee.

well both of my dogs are CKC Continental Kennel Club but Rambos parents where CKC and AKC registered so that made the puppies having to be CKC registered.. the breeder couldn't afford the expensive AKC paperwork for her female so she registered her with CKC....so if one parent is AKC and the other CKC you can't register for AKC because both have to be AKC...or you can have a AKC dog and not register/pay the expensive price for AKC and get CKC paperwork...they do have bloodwork/proof of being a real dachshund...I know that many people look down at CKC and I'm sorry but it was great for me...I couldn't afford the AKC price and my breeder did give me all paperwork to register if I wanted to register Rambo with AKC and pay even more for the papers.....she would help me with the paperwork etc...She has both ckc and akc pups...Now Sophie I think both parents are CKC...I think CKC is great/was great for me...

AKC is THE Major dog registry in the US.. Emphasis on REGISTRY... They go to great lengths to ensure your puppies ancestry is what your breeder says it is. They can not guarantee or stand behind the quality of your puppy.. no one can other than the breeder.

If you ever plan to participate in events such as Obedience, Rally, Agility, tracking, EarthDog, Conformation, Field Trials that are put on by AKC clubs your dog must be registered or for most at least ILP'd . Why? Because breed clubs put on these events and all the records, rules, standards, titles etc are maintained by AKC

The only other *legitimate* registry in the US is UKC. All others are basically pet registries and really are for all intents and purposes.. worthless... It just sounds nicer for the breeder to advertise the puppies as registered.

AKC puppies might cost a little more.. but there are some reasons for that... record keeping does not come free.

From the AKC Website...A couple of advantages of AKC...
AKC Registration and Quality

There is a widely held belief that "AKC" or "AKC papers" guarantee the quality of a dog. This is not the case. AKC is a registry body. A registration certificate identifies the dog as the offspring of a known sire and dam, born on a known date. It in no way indicates the quality or state of health of the dog. Quality in the sense of "show quality" is determined by many factors including the dog's health, physical condition, ability to move and appearance. Breeders breeding show stock are trying to produce animals that closely resemble the description of perfection described in the breed standard. Many people breed their dogs with no concern for the qualitative demands of the breed standard. When this occurs repeatedly over several generations, the animals, while still purebred, can be of extremely low quality. Before buying a dog, you should investigate the dog's parentage (including titles, DNA and pedigree information), the breeder's breeding practices, the breed standard, and the genetic tests recommended by the Parent Club for the breed. For more information, go to About Buying a Dog (http://www.akc.org/future_dog_owner/about_buying_a_dog.cfm) and visit the Parent Club website (http://www.akc.org/clubs/search/index.cfm?action=national&display=on).

How AKC Registration Functions

The American Kennel Club registration system can be described as a cycle, which is repeated every generation. A convenient starting point is the registration of a litter. In order for a litter to be eligible for registration, the sire (Father/stud dog) and the dam (Mother/bitch) must be individually AKC registered and the litter must be whelped in the United States. Registration of the litter must be completed before any of the pups from the litter can be individually registered with AKC. Application to register a litter must be submitted on a Litter Registration Application form. This form, as well as others mentioned here, is available upon request. The owners of the sire and dam should complete and sign the appropriate portions of the application and submit it to AKC with the required fee.

Both Nidgie and Dweenger are AKC registered.
As said, that registration lets you show them in AKC sanctioned dog shows and events. Confirmation if they have not been altered and the other events even if they have been. That registration does not mean your dog has any guarantee of winning any kind of a ribbon in confirmation. It is up to you to be able to train your dog and get ribbons and certificates in obedience and the other events.
All of it takes time, dedication and money.
