Jazzie's Mom

Jazzie is now 10 months old. I got her from a breeder when she was 8 months old. She wasn't house trained.

I bought the pads and the first time I caught her peeing on the rug I immediately took her over to the pads. Well after a few days she got the hang of it and now no matter where she is she will run to her pad to pee. She is also good about going outside.

Now for the problem....She will not poop on the pad. She insist on going on the rug, but will only do it if I'm not looking. I swear she waits for me to go into the shower. So therefore, I have not been able to catch her and bring her over to her pad. She always goes on the same area of the rug. Sometimes when I get up in the morning I will see that she peed on the pad and pooped on the rug.

What can I do to get her to go all on the pad? It is so odd that she only relates the pad to peeing. I thought when they learned one or the other it woould be the same thing.

Help........ I'm at a loss. Since I don't catch her I can't correct her. Any suggestions.

It's odd, but Molly was the exact same way. She's use the pad to potty, but would poop next to the pad, but not on it. Sammy on the other hand will do both on the pad. We started taking them out every couple of hours, and Molly has learned to do her pooping outdoors. If we leave them in the day, we often come home to a wet pad with poop near it. But as long as we take them out, we don't have that problem.

If she's doing it when you aren't around, probably the best thing to do is not let her have the run of the house. At least that would stop her from ruining your rug.

I have the same problem with pooping. My 4 month old will pee outside pretty well. She seems determined to poop in the house however. I can put her out, she pees, then comes back in and poops on the rug. I have taken to crating her during the day and night, but she poops in the crate too and sleeps in it.

My husband is ready to send the dog away, but I love her sooo much (she's the cutest little piebald). Help!

Joan:

First, make sure you clean the areas where Jazzie has peed and pooped with Nature's Miracle or similar enzymatic cleaner. If she can smell it, she'll go there again. You might also try putting a piece of furniture there so she CAN'T go there again!

When you're in the shower or can't watch her for some other reason, put her in her crate. If she doesn't have a crate, get one! It's not a place of punishment--you'll need to introduce her to it gradually with treats and such--but it is a place where she's not likely to want to poop, since she has to sit there afterward!

That's odd. Belle, my 14 month old Dachsie does the same thing. she will go potty on the pads but she goes poop RIGHT next to it. When I got her at 6 months the breeder said that she was paper-trained and she did real well..... for the first couple days that is. then she just stopped. and NO MATTER what I do she won't stop. I can't let her roam the yard all day because it isn't fenced (I live on 7 acres) Belle71901
