I had a question regarding different coats in a litter. Conner is from a red smooth tweenie and a black and tan dappled tweenie. Conner's litter had 4 red smooth and 1 black longhaired puppy in it. Well Conner's mom had another litter with the same father and that is where I am getting Callie from. This litter only had 3 girls (the 4th girl died getting stuck coming out). There is one red/smooth, one red/longhaired/ and Callie is black longhaired.

My question is how is that two smooth dachies can have longhaired pups? Its pretty funny how things come out so I thought I would ask.

Thanks,
Shannon

The longhair gene is carried recessively. In order for a longhair to be born by two smooth parents both parents must be carrying the longhair gene. Usually the longhair born of this parentage will not have the profuse coat of a 'normal' longhair but genetically the resultant puppy IS a longhair and will only produce longhairs IF bred.
