View Full Version : Eating toys

My Rocky eats his toys. He pulls apart plush and chews through plastic. He will eat the stuffing and swallow plastic parts. He is a virtual vaccuum and I can't find any toys that can withstand him. Any suggestions? He loves the plush squeaky toys, but they just don't last more than a couple of days at most - 15 minutes for some.
Clearly this is a typical Dachsie, but 15 minutes for the kind of toys you described is a long time for a toy to be intact . . . with a Dachsie anyway. :)
Most toys other than things like Galileo bones, etc. (indestructible) last about 2-5 minutes at best.
If you find any "plush squeaky toys" that last with a Dachsie . . . let us know and the manufacturer will make a mint just from us Dachshund owners.

I agree with Mark, this is typical doxie behavior for most doxies. My girls aren't really into toys. But my first doxie Fritz was. He had a basket full and he didn't not share. He was very careful with his favorites and would make sure that they didn't get destroyed. The others, well, if he couldn't tear it up, de-squeak and de-stuf it in just 15 minutes, he wasn't interested.
I understand that kongs are pretty indestructable. Of course you fill those with treats so that may put the whole thing on a different level in the doxie realm of things. I have been meaaning to get a couple of them too se how the girls like them. Everytime I am ina store that has them I either forget or I don't have the extra money at that time...
Just look at this way... think of all the fun your baby is going to have trying to find the indestructable toy!

This is definitely an issue in our house! Henry is a toy lover and will carry his "babies" all over. He loves stuffed animals and will be happy playing with one, napping with one, etc. all day long. jake, on the other hand,...well we've timed him with stuffed animals and I just hope he never actually catches a chipmunk.
The favorite toys in our house are made by Multipet - the "Worth" family toys. There are now four different "Worth" families - the Bunnyworths, the Duckworths, the Wallyworths, and most recently the Doggyworths. Each family has a mother, father, daughter, and son.
Jake still "operates" on the toys, taking out the squeaker and stuffing...but the toys have enough fluffy fur that they are still enjoyable. Henry will carry around the destuffed Worth toys and think nothing of it. Jake will still play with them, too.
Now, according to Henry's ratings...the Bunnyworths are good. The Duckworths are downright lovable. And the Wallyworths are just irresistible! I can't rate the Doggyworths yet, although we do have a couple stashed away in the closet (it's a two person job around here to sneak in toys and hide them).
The cheapest place that I have found them is JB Pets (on-line) www.jbpet.com They have good prices compared to any other store which carries them
Oh...and just an odd observance....Henry seems to like the lighter colored toys (the mother and daughter are lighter than the father and son)...white ducks over yellow ducks....tan walruses over brown walruses....pink bunnies over gray bunnies...and I will assume he will prefer the white puppies over the tan puppies

Boy, do I understand this one! My 3 go through toys like lightning. Pepper was the worset thought. (Someone recently stole him). 15 minutes for a toy with him would be an eternity. The other 3 do pretty good. Did buy some Kongs and they last pretty good. That is until my Border collie and my heeler took them outside. Now they are missing. I was at a dog show last weekend and one of the vendors had a bin of half price stuffed squeaky toys. They were ugly but I bought a bunch.
If we could only ciome up with stuffed squeaky toys (their favorite) that stayed in one piece for a week!

Wow. Thanks for all the responses. I was hoping to hear it was a phase he was going through but I guess we are just going to have to save up for stacks of doggie toys!

The only toys that last around our house are the nylabones, rope toys and kongs. Everything else is desroyed in a matter of seconds. How can such a sweet dog be so violent on toys..LOL

Reading this post literally made me laugh out loud. They are such funny characters!
Dora loves her toys. She has a toy basket that we put her toys into and she digs through, looking for favorites. She picks one, plays a while, leaves it and comes to find another.
She loves squeeky toys and hasn't graduated to surgeon yet. These stuffed, squeeky toys are what she grabs when I'm on the phone. She sits at my feet, squeaking it, making racket until I get off the phone and pay attention to her. (She can be asleep when I get on the phone and then, its her signal to grab a "squeaky")
The sight of her squeaking one of these toys make us all chuckle when she comes prancing across the room with one. They are shaped like people/gingerbread men and she grabs it between the legs, head facing forward, squeaking as she goes.
She has gnawed through a Kong ball (I think that's what it used to be). It was a red ball with a hole in it, big enough to slide treats into. Even when it was empty, she still managed to hold it between her paws and gnaw at the end of it. WHen I discovered she was doing this, I threw it away because the hole was bigger than the ball. :circle:
She has a large stuffed bear that she "dominates" in a nasty way but then settles down and I find her asleep on it, drapped across it but with a bear's paw in her mouth. She has sucked both front paws into a nipple shape and it is wet and soggy when I take it from her. However, if she is rough-housing with it, she starts tearing at the fur which is my clue to remove it from her view.
Anything hard plastic seems to be edible to her...and she has torn strings from her kong rope toy as she removed the knot from one end. Its like she is sweet and gentle until something kicks in and then she is a destroyer. Plastic straws she finds, ball point pens are the worst and I double check the floors and my husbands table beside his chair before I leave in the morning for work.
She finds golfballs in the backyard, buried deep under bushes from the previous home owners golf practice and she de-skins them. Eeeks!
The exception seems to be nylabones. I've tried several flavors and she doesn't seem to get the concept of chewing on one of these. What's up with that? WHat flavors do your wienerdogs love?
So for Dora, the stuffed squeeky animals are safe (I suspect because she likes the squeeky part) but the other toys have to be monitored....and then removed. I'm headed to the pet store this weekend for more kong toys/nylabones with new flavors... if I can afford them. They are pricey!
