Wondering how many pets come through Shelters/Rescues...
blazeman

I got Jake from a breeder, even though I work for a rescue group. We haven't gotten many pups in the group and a foster that I had nipped at my god daughter so I wanted her to be a part of picking out my puppy.
Rescues are great, but aren't the answer each and every time!

I purchased Rudy and Roscoe from a breeder as companions on neuter contracts.
Gwen came to me through a private adoption.
I am happy to say that Gwen is no less bonded to me than the boys, though she came to me as an adult. She just needed a place to be safe, happy and loved. I sure didn't miss the puppy terrors either ;).

Aug was a whoops, wish we got his Dad but we missed out on that.

Chief was at a training facility around the corner from our apartment that takes in unwanted dogs/cats. He was in the window with his name on the wire cage. When I inquired about him I was told one of the workers was taking him. I was a little heartbroken but thought if it wasn't meant to be than so be it. Next week I went back there I went back there and noticed a dog that looked exactly like Chief but the name had changed to "weenie." ACK! In any event I asked if this was the same dog, and they said yes. I asked why was he returned and why was his name changed. didn't get a straight answer which had me wondering. In any event, as fate should have it, we got him and took him home. In the back of my mind I can't wonder how he was treated before hand.
Their loss is our TREASURE :)

I got charlie from a pet store. I know I know, pet stores are thought of as the worst places in order to get a pet, but we walked by and saw Charlie sitting there and couldn't resist. It seems that because charlie had a docked tail, they didn't believe they could sell him. We didn't mind paying pet store prices, and the fact that he wasn't registered. We contacted the breeder, who had said the reason he had a docked tail was because when they were transporting them the company had damaged his tail *How terrible is that* but she was able to give me any information that I wanted about him, so I thought that was cool. anyways, we love him all the same, he has a great temperment, is very loving, and has all the crazy quarks that you guys mention.

They were part of the package when I started dating my fiance, Ed.
My life changed the morning the Company Chairman`s sister visited the office. She had this beautiful "brown" creature with her. I had never seen one before at close quarters. She handed it to me, and it gazed up at me with loving brown eyes. "What is it" I said. After she explained that "she" was a miniature dachshund. I said that if she ever became pregnant could I have one of the pups.
Twelve months later seated at my desk, the phone rang. I picked it up and this voice (that I didn`t recognise) said "Poppy`s pregnant". After panicking for a moment, I remembered who Poppy was. Then arranged to view the litter and pick our pup. Sigi.
Seventeen months later. Poppy became pregnant again, and Otto our second dachsie joined us. Sadly Poppy decided then to call it quits, otherwise who knows how many dachsies we would own!!!

We got our Gretta from our county dog shelter in August, 2005. They said she was 3 years old and was left at the shelter because the owner was moving. (?) She is a wonderful pet and came to us fully house trained. My husband and I are retired and old enough that we preferred getting a grown up dog instead of going through the puppy stages (although pups are adorable). It had been 5 years since we owned a dog and we really missed having one to hold, play with, and to love (and be loved by). We are really fortunate to have her. Becky :) :)

Panda was a breeder female. I purchased her at 1.5 yrs old.
She was bred her first heat cycle and ended-up having a c-section
I'm told. She was bred again the next cycle and had problems
delivering. I wanted a dog that was out of the puppy stage
and mostly potty trained. She was the perfect answer.
Is it normal for breeders to breed a female right away on the first
cycle. At only 5-7 months old?

Penny & Mags
01-17-2006, 07:11 AM
Penny was given to us by a friend. (She's from an 'accidental' litter.)
We got Maggie from a woman that used to post on this board. Maggie had some pretty severe temperament issues and they were going to put her to sleep but agreed to let DH and me take her if we'd pay the airfare. (They'd purchased Maggie from a breeder, but the woman wouldn't take Maggie back when things didn't work out.)
Heidi belongs to friends but stays with us Sept - May, while they're in FL. (If I had my way she'd stay with us year round though! ;))
My best friend, Crystal, her mom had a male and female and this was going to be her last litter. Well, I had said something to her about getting a dog thinking that it would help with my depression and plus too I wanted something to come home to everyday. My BF was and still is not ready to settle down and we do not live together. So, she was like Ginger has had her last litter and all the pups are sold but two males. Well I never considered a Dachsie, I was leaning towards more of a Chi or maybe a small pup from the pound. I did very thorough research on them and decided to go look. I went and of course Charlie chose me, but I didn't have $200 to get him, plus take him to the vet for shots. So I had to decline. 2 days later Crystal clld me and said that her dad told her that if I would give him a loving home, I could have him. Well, that same day, I went to get him and my life has never been the same since! People ask do I have kids, I say "Yes, I have a Dach(son)" He is my boy, my baby, and the joy in my life!!

I needed a small breed in order to handle potty & evacuation issues - since I live in a hurricane area. A mini dachsie was my choice.
My family who live in GA made endless trips to breeders to find the right one for me. They were not happy with so many - until they found Oscar's breeder in TN. They kept Oscar for about a month until they could take time to bring him home to FL.
He is the light of my life!! A gentle little man who has been a joy to own. I wanted him to have a companion dog for company & someone to play with - so the search was on again. Oscar's breeder did not have any pups for sale at this time.
They found Buck's breeder in GA & while they were picking him out for me - they decided to adopt his litter mate Topo. We have family reunions & we all get together several times a year.
I went through Potty Training 101 twice - but Buck & Oscar are bonded & love each other so much....it was worth it. :puppyluv:

Gunner came from a lady in Tucson who's doxie just had a littler. Prtunia came from Beckie Decker who had her and took care of her--even though she is not one of Beckies litter pups. We love them both and would not trade them for anything in this world.:hearts:

I adopted Roxy from my local all-breed rescue (that I volunteered for at the time) 4yrs ago. I just recently went back to the same rescue and adopted Bailey a red smooth mini male. I don't volunteer as much for them anymore since I live 125miles away. That is the only reason that I don't. They are a great group of ladies who really care about animals(yes there are some men in that group, mostly husbands:D ).

Harley came from a breeder--but we consider him a rescue. He was supposed to be a stud dog but when he failed to perform his duties the woman was going to get rid of him. We heard it through someone else. So I don't know what it meant when she would get rid of him. We had been looking at shelters and petfinder for months and I said I would take him. Minnie was from a lady my mother in law works with. She has two already and had taken in a foster --later adopted--that was pregnant. So we took one of the three puppies and she kept one. The other went to another gentleman that had a dachshund years before.

I have kind of a long story about how I acquired Graci- so here it goes :)
I had been wanting a dachsie for over three years..... looking EVERYWHERE! shelters, breeders, ect. but I couldnt seem to find the right one. May 2003 My familly informed me that my great grandma was not doing well, and that she may not have much time left. so we all went to see her and tell her goodbye. we were all heartbroken that we would lose her but she had emphazema and was suffering terribly for years. I sat with my grandma for about an hour and just talked. I told her I wanted a dachshund. before I left her bedside my grandma told me that somehow she would get me a dachshund. two weeks later she passed away. finally I found a great breeder and found the perfect puppy. she was beautiful! as the breeder handed me her papers and health records, my heart stopped. there written on the health record was her birthdate. June 7th 2003. the same date that my grandmother passed. to this day I believe my grandma kept her promise.

Petey's Mom
12-18-2006, 03:33 PM
Sounds like that was meant to be!
I bought Petey from a breeder, never had a dachsie before but I always liked them. Several months later I figured out that he needed a buddy, so I asked my son what kind he'd like. He wanted a Yorkie or a papillon...but I sweet talked him into another dachshund, and he said "Ok...a dachshund...IF you can find a longhair chocolate dapple" I was already set on a rescue, so without much hope of finding a longhair choc/tan dapple in rescue, I hit the internet...and lo and behold, Kentucky Dachshund Rescue had one! I came back to this board and asked for a KDR contact, found out we had one as a member...long story short, we adopted Chief this fall. My furry boys are best buds, and I can't imagine life without them :hearts:

Willie came from Southern States Dachshund Rescue in Tennessee. He was dumped on the side of the road somewhere near Birmingham, AL and the local shelter contacted SSDR. And now he is MINE furever!!!!!!!!!
Halfpint's Mom
03-15-2007, 07:48 PM
I didn't pick an answer on the poll, because I needed a couple different ones!
I consider Halfpint a rescue. My (now ex) husband saw her in a crate in a yard in the neighborhood on a cool fall day. He was a friend of their next door neighbor, so they went over and asked the guy if he'd sell them the puppy in the yard, and ended up trading a go-cart frame for her!! Halfpint is not only my first doxie, she's my first dog, and I wouldn't trade her for anything. She was the one good thing that came out of that marriage!!
Rocky came from a pet store before I'd ever heard about puppy mills. He'll be 8 years old next week.
Buddy was my 2nd CCDR foster, and he was adopted my another member of this board, but he decided he wanted to come back to live with me because he didn't want to be with her younger dachshund! I said he was crazy because he could've been in the perfect dachshund home, but for whatever reason, he picked me!
Jason was my most recent foster, now adopted by me. He is from a puppy mill bust in PA.

We got Bailey from a breeder and Reese was a rescue.
Annie's Mom
03-17-2007, 01:06 PM
Annie was listed on Petfinder.com and the irony is, I didn't like her photo. She has a dapple and I wasn't used to that coat type. I contacted the rescue group about a different dog, but he'd been taken. So the rescue lady offered to meet me at a neutral site with six other dachshunds for me to consider.
Annie only came for the ride. She'd been in rescue for 8 months with a large group of dogs. The rescue lady said she thought Annie needed to get outside, but told me, "Oh, you don't want her. She has no personality at all." Annie had spent most of her time hiding under the lady's bed.
But by that time, Annie had jumped right onto the sofa, got into my lap, nestled down and looked up as if to say, "You can look at those other hounds, but I'm going home with you!" She's been at my side almost constantly for three years now. I am so besotted, she became a plot device in my new novel. Dreamers of the Day will be out in January of 2008 and if I say so myself, the dachshund in it is beautifully described!
My's Crew
03-18-2007, 10:08 PM
Frankie- came from a local flea market-I went looking for a puppy and he was the only one there. He is the best doxie ever.
Rustie- was a stray that kept hanging around a co-workers house. He was there for about 2 months before I got him. Unfortunately he got heartworms-but he is HW negative now.
Gabbie- pet store. She was soo tiny and so cute I had to get her. I vow though to never purchase a doxie again. So many need rescue.
Vinnie- owner gave him to my groomer - she was a fulltime student and worked fulltime. My groomer asked me if I wanted a bald doxie and I said sure.
Peanut- given to me by a co-worker, he was to hyper for her and I had young doxies so he had someone to play with.

I voted for "other" as my guys came from a 'back yard' breeder who was very questionable in my opinion and I paid really dearly to 'rescue' these two little guys that were going to the pet store to be sold in a couple more days.
No responsible breeder would ever send the pups to a friend who had a pet store for them to be sold! This particular breeder was also into breeding for blues and dilute double dapples and all sorts of horrible combinations. My guys have AKC papers but would never meet any kind of a breed standard! Their personalities are wonderful as fas as I am concerned but when the breeder found out they were standards she asked that I not tell anybody they had come from her! She only bred minatures! Their 'mother' is only about half their size or less.

http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb187/nissy65/DCP_2432.jpgMy story involves my dog Rocky who had passed away 5/8/03. I had been diagnosed with thyroid cancer 2 wks after my Rocky died she had had thyroid problems..she was a shepherd/golden mix! So, I had to go thru cancer surgery adn radiation without my strength. A week after my treatment was over I decided I was ready to go looking for my new love. I kept looking at doxies but would walk out. One day my sis came over to check on me and we went on a walk with my husband around my complex..we were literally 3 doors from my house when I said..I REALLY want a dog. Next thing I know a lady walking in front of us turns around and says...I am selling this puppy!! I look and she has this adorable doxie in her sweatshirt hood!! LOVE!!!!!!! She was ine from that moment. I felt like Rocky had found her for me and then to seal the deal..this is WEIRD.. I brought Cocoa into my house and put her down..She went straight over to a wall unit I have and started scratching. I thought uh-oh..next thing she has Rocky's favorite toy!! I didn't even know it had been there since she died. She got the toy and climbed into bed with me in Rocky's old spot and has been there ever since.. She is my "angel on earth" helping me eal with Rocky's passing:angel:

No it is not ok to breed a female on her first heat. You are supposed to wait 2-3years depending on the female. For one there just not mentally mature to go through the whole ordeal, however some have. But its putting the pup/mom at a huge risk.

I voted other...
I had no intention or want to get a doxie (no offense) but I was personally never a fan of small dogs (Hence the reason I have 2 great danes!) lol
We do dog rescue for all breeds, and we were contacted by a puppymill/BYB breeder (who has around 50 dogs) who wanted to rehome a few of her breeder chihuahuas, soo..she called me..i agreed to take the chi's and when I went down to pick them up, she was showing me some of her puppies (i was trying so hard to hide my true feelings!)
Then, she pulled out this pair of doxie puppies...the one she said she was considering taking him to the pound, but the warden already told her he would be euthanized due to his deformed eye...
that's all it took..i called my dad...and on the verge of tears told him the story..and just PRAYED he would allow me to bring the baby home...
His answer was "but he isnt' staying" and I was fine with that..
She couldn't "Give" him away, due to him having his shots (but he could be dumped at the pound?!):faint:
Soo..I paid her the 50 in vet bills..scooped him up & brought him home..
Dad held him a total..of 4 minutes (I THINK) before we decided he woudl be here forever!
Marble is now a much loved member of our family!! :D

Schatzi, our first dachshund came to us as a 4 mth old pup-she was due to be euthanized by a local puppy mill broker. He figured he couldn't sell her in his store, so he wanted her destroyed. Thankfully, he took her to a local veterinarian office where I had a friend of a friend working there, who called me immediately to see if I would take her. The rest is history! And the broker? He doesn't know (or care for that matter) that she wasn't PTS.
Oskar, our pie boy - we adopted through Almost Home Dachshund Rescue - he was 2 yrs. old and was surrendered because he bit in his previous home. He has been with us for 4 years on May 21st.
Xena, our little Miss Bed Head, was adopted through CDR 1.5 yrs. ago. She & her mother were surrendered into rescue. Her mother was adopted & Xena stole my heart & never left. She was my last foster - having fostered 4 dachshunds before her - I failed Fostering 101 miserably! lol!

Our first doxie was a stray. We found him wandering along a busy intersection with a rope tied around his neck. This, thanks to our beloved Squirtie, was the start of our love of daschunds. We also have 3 cats, all adopted. One from a shelter and two from homes who could no longer care for them.
We also adopted Tasha, our rottie, after Uncle Fred passed away and no one wanted her (their loss). After Squirtie died, we adopted Charlie, Tammy & Lily from Bren's rescue.
They have all enriched our lives so much. We are so thankful for each day we have to share with each and everyone of our babies. :hearts:
