I got some very horrible news today. Shelby's mom, Kobbler died last Monday. She had a c-section on Sept. 15th and had 5 puppies. She was spayed immediately after. She was a good mom to those puppies for the next 24 hours. The next morning, the breeder could tell there was something not right with her so she rushed her to her vet, which is 1 hour away. The vet thought she was suffering from eclampsia. She passed away an hour later. My heart is broken. :( Kobbler is the reason I have my sweet Shelby. I didn't like dapples until I saw Kobbler. She was love at first sight for me. The most beautiful dapple I've ever seen. I wish I could post her picture on here. She was a precious one. She would have been 5 next week. I am hugging Shelby a little tighter tonight. She is truly a gift from God.

Sherry,
So sorry to hear of Kobbler's passing. Now she is at the bridge. Have you heard how her pups are doing?

Thanks, Char! I held poor Shelby in my arms all night. It broke my heart to know that she had no clue that her mother is gone. They were together until she was 8 months old. I got my days mixed up! Kobbler was with the puppies at the vets for a couple days, and then died on the 3rd day. 4 of the puppies are doing great. I believe they were all a good size. The one puppy has a bent tail and they don't know how he's going to do just yet. I wish I could take him in. I would love to have Shelby's half sibling with us. I just can't imagine giving birth and then being taken from my babies. My heart breaks for the breeder. She's having a hard time.

Our deepest sympathies, prayers and understanding for the loss of Kobbler.

What is eclampsia?

To be honest, I really didn't know what "eclampsia" was. I heard about pre-eclampsia during both of my pregnancies. I knew it was associated with edema and high blood pressure. It is sometimes referred to toxemia. So, poor Kobbler must have had high blood pressure after birth and swelling. The vet could not see her heart or lungs on the x-ray.
This is what I found on WebMD:
Pre-eclampsia and eclampsia are forms of high blood pressure that occur during pregnancy and are accompanied by protein in the urine and edema (swelling). As the names suggest, these two disorders are related. Pre-eclampsia, sometimes called toxemia of pregnancy, may develop into the more severe eclampsia, which is pre-eclampsia together with seizure. These conditions usually develop during the second half of pregnancy (after 20 weeks), though sometimes they develop shortly after birth, and, in very rare situations, they occur before 20 weeks of pregnancy.
I learn something new every day! :)

Hi,
So sorry to hear of the passing of Shelby's mum, how very sad.
Eclampsia in dogs is not the same as in women. It is a loss of calcium from their blood stream, or actually an inability of the body to utilise the calcium. The vets administer intravenous calcium, and normally, if caught soon enough, the bitch will be fine. My little bitch developed it when her pups were two weeks old. She was lucky and after calcium injections for twenty four hours she was back to normal. It can be very dramatic, the bitch may just appear stiff in her limbs and have a funny expression, then with in a very short time they can become comatose with severe seizures. The temperature soars, they pant and salivate and may vomit. Bye for now Dawn and dachsies.
i am so sorry to hear about your loss. i will be praying for you.
