What's a natural alternative to getting rid of that wierd yet hard to describe smell that kinda smells like an outdoor smell? It's like during the summer Mocha smells like a combo of frito feet and outside. I know frequent bathing is bad for the skin and coat, but what can I do?

Mine usually smell like earth, and I love it. There are wipes sold that you can use for freshening up, or sometimes I spray some lavender water on my hands and rub it on them. Of course they also love to roll on dryer sheets and smell great after that!

I don't bathe Buddy unless he goes and rolls in something really stinky. I find that so long as I keep his blankets in his kennel clean and fresh smelling, he stays that way as well. If anything, I would opt for some of the lavendar water that Katja suggested. Sounds good, I may try that just because!

I just try to keep the bedding washed well.
It's my vacuum smells like Fritos.

I wash the bedding but it seems like after a week it gets smelly again. I also use the Febreeze for pets everyday to freshen it up. Is there a something else I could do? Should I just wash everything once a week? I usually wash bedding every other week.

Also, I saw in the Drs. Smith and Foster's catalog some volcanic rock that is placed in a mesh bag. I think I'll order some of that. I tried buying some at PetSmart, but it worked for my mom who only has my brothers dog who just visits during the week while he is at work, but that kind only worked so-so for me. I have tried Smells -Begone too and that works, but it only lasts about 2-3 months.

Do you put the volcanic rock inside the bedding? I know it sounds like a stupid question, but I've never heard of that method before.

How do you make lavander water? Just water mixed with lavander oil?

You might add some baking soda to the final rinse water after blanket washing - baking soda is notorious for removing nasty smells, among other things. We keep it in the fridge for just that purpose and our fridge stays fresh-smelling!

I'll give it try. I keep baking soda in my fridge and freezer too.

Another thing is to add 20 mule team Borax. Also, be sure you are washing with not a lot of detergent, in a hot water temp. Vinegar can be used in the rinse cycle for softening. If you are overdoing it with fabric softeners, it may be building up in the fabric and causing odors as well. I personally don't like those Fabreeze products.

I gotta admit, I actually like Dragons 'smell'. :sorry: Its a combo of Frito and DOG. I think after going without a dog for a while, having Dragon now, I just still cant get enough of snuggling my face into his neck and loving on him, I missed it so much while I was 'dogless'. He sleeps in his crate, elevated and right next to my head, or in bed with us, I find it comforting at night to be able to hear him breathing and smell that dachsie frito scent :D
I just wipe him down with a towel, unless he gets into something icky, or needs his glands expressed, then he gets a full bath. I do wash his bedding about twice a week though.

I'm going to try some of the other tips, baking-soda, vinegar etc.
I guess you just hang the mesh-bag. I was asking my sister about it and she gave me one she had. I have to lay it out in the sun to reactivate the rock.
Hope it works.
