I would ask everyone to remember Champ. I found Champ and his mate, Chester, a few weeks ago at our shelter. They were removed from a neglect situation along with the children. I found a great foster home for them close to me and Angela and I went to get these boys. They were with Angela for one week when out of the blue, Champ had a seizure. I instructed her to vet him immediately which she did. It was a major seizure and he had another at the vet office. Unfortunayely, Champ died that night. The vet thinks that years of poor care and infection led to encephalitis. He wasn't sure of Champs age and guessed anywhere from 5-10. The sad thing is...we had a great forever home waiting for Champ and Chester. Chester will be going alone now. I'm so sad about losing Champ but I know we did all we could and I'm so glad Angela was there and he had a happy home for a few weeks. Please remember Champ.

Tanya,
I'm sorry to hear of Champ's passing. It sure sounds like he was headed for a great new home. Now he is at the bridge and I hope he has someone to wait for. What kind of dog was he?

We will light a candle for Champ in NYC to help in to Rainbow bridge. What an unfortunate situation that was going to be a happy ending :(

Champ was a tiny dachshund mini. Short hair, red. Little guy. Very very sweet. His adopters were very sad that he passed away but they are still taking Chester. At least Champ was well loved in his last days. I hate we couldn't get him earlier in his life.

I think there is a special page at the memorial gardens for those who passed while waiting for a new home. One modified version the the rainbow bridge tells the story of how when ever a resue person arrives at the bridge all those who didn't have anyone to wait for come out and accompany the rescuer across the bridge .
When I got Dexter as a foster there was a senior male LH that also needed a foster home at the same time. Having long hair boys I was wishing I would get him. I anm guilty to admit taht I was relieved that I didn't get him since less than 36 hours after he was taken home he started to have seizures. Rescue took him to the vet who did test and found advanced liver damage most likely a result of years of dental neglect. People from rescue were with him when he was helped on his way to the bridge. It was as if he managed to hold out the week or two that he was at the shelter so that he could be with someone he felt safe with before giving in to his failing body.

Tanya, you did more for Champ than anyone before had probably done in his life. It is always heartbreaking to lose the rescues before they get to their adopters, but he was loved in his final days, and he knew it.
Dutchman is right -- there is a special part of the Memorial Garden just for rescues.
Hugs from Chicago,
Pamela
