View Full Version : Crate Training
Can anyone enlighten me please?
No-one I have spoken to in this country has heard of "crate training".
Obviously it involves a crate and a dog, but what exactly happens and what is it supposed to achieve?

Well, the crate is a dog carrier or cage, sometimes wire, sometimes plastic (just making sure we understand our terms here!). It should be just large enough for the dog to turn around in. One of the main uses of crate training is to help housetrain puppies. You can put them in the crate, for example, when you know they're going to need to "go" soon and you don't want them to sneak off and pee in the house. It's also a good place for them to sleep at night (as soon as they can make it through the night without needing to go) or just to use as their own little retreat. It's based on the idea that dogs like having their own small enclosed space.
