I make my own "canned food" since the wheat gluten fiasco last year. Here is my recipe:
2 lbs 80-90% hamburger (the more fat, the harder it is to break up when cooking)
2 bouillion cubes (I use beef ones by Wylers) or
1 t garlic salt
long-cooking rice (it's cheaper than minute rice)...some are better than others at cooking! I make a 3cup serving (1.5c water, 2T buttre, 1t salt)
1 can julienne sliced green beans
1 can peas
1 can creamed corn (makes the food sweeter)
_____________________________
Start the rice (it takes 15 minutes)
Brown the hamburger
Add bouillion cubes to hamburger
Drain beans and peas
Add all veggies to hamburger
Add rice to the hamburger mix
Put half in a ziplock and freeze it. Put the other half in a covered bowl for daily use.
Let dogs sample
Depending on the # of mouths you have to feed, each dog gets a heaping tablespoon on top of their HundenFlocken dry and this recipe will last about a week and a half for 4 weiners
------------------------------
Some variations on this are:
1) Dont cook the hamburger...or...
2) Add some spaghetti sauce to the rice before you mix it into the hamburger...or...
3) You can cook a chicken or turkey (very time-consuming to pull it off the bone, though)
ps...hehehe...I fed it to Bob for dinner one night. He bemoaned, "I'm eating dogfood." :happy030:

I would leave the boulion out and just add carrots and celery for the flavoring. I make something similar I also do it with Chicken. Some of the people here on the board use low sodium chicken broth. You might give that a try.

The recipe is bouillion cubes or garlic salt. But, I suppose I should at least leave the salt out of the rice. The whole recipe makes a huge bowl of food...like ten or twelve cups. So, two little bouillion cubes really isnt that much.
Those darn rats are so picky, though, that they wont even eat this sometimes...which is why I started putting the garlic or beef flavoring in.
Not they would waste away to nothing anytime soon... But mom likes to see them eat :hearts:
My great dane would get diarrhea (tough one to spell!) if I put soup juice or spaghetti sauce in his food. Too much salt. The weiners seem to have iron constitutions!
But I did look up salt / dogs (I got a lot of sea captain returns for "Salty Dogs" :D ) But I did find a page that has a ton of good info for items not to feed a dog and said that salt in too great of a quantity is not good for dogs (or anyone, for that matter)

The only home cooking I do is chicken and white rice - no salt added - for
the very rare times of an upset tummy. This bland diet is fed for 2 or 3 days. I don't get into the cooking for them as I am not going to add all the nutrients that they need. Just too much expense - time and trouble for me.
I feed them Nature's Variety raw frozen medallions and NV brand of kibble. They love the food and think the kibble is a treat.

Hon I would leave the salt out. You can add a tiny bit of fresh garlic. You can also puree veggies and add that to it. I have mixed chicken with beef and made that. You know that this is not a long term food though right. Because they need all kinds of vitamins, they need muscle meat, they need bone meal etc, etc.

High quality dry food (Solid Gold Hunden Flocken) mixed with a little hamburger, rice, and a variety of vegetables for some flavor is not a long term diet? If my dogs are missing something in their diet, then I need to buy them some Doggie-One-A-Day's!

I cook long white rice, and either boneless chicken breast or hamburger but don't like all the fat so we drain the oily fat off and pour in fresh water. Cook meat first then pour in rice. I also buy frozen veggies and cook them as well they eat if up like that's all they are getting. Our babies aren't spoiled they just eat well sometimes better than we do. I like the idea of cooking celery and green beans and a cream of corn together with the meat. They also sometimes get Mac and Cheese. When you ask are yall hungry? Get out of their way or they will run you over on the way to the kitchen. They all know their own bowls and when its time to eat! They will let you know if your not on time!! Just ask them after 5:30pm. It's like they have a time clock in them.
Well that's all folks,
Misty and the human is outta. Its time to EAT.

I'll look into those vitamins. Thanks!
I used to add the Solid Gold SeaMeal (enzymes) and the Flax Seed Oil, but I got away from that (not sure why?? maybe because it took 20 minutes to make each meal! I dont spend that much time on people meals!) and I used to feed them Nature's Variety, but after two years they got sick of it.
Though, it astounds me that they will chase kibble thrown on the floor (during the making of meals) ...but once in their bowl, they look at me like, "DOGFOOD? YUK!" So, for my pickiest one (she goes in streaks), some days I will let her chase enough around the kitchen to satisfy ME :D
Actually, the Solid Gold I am feeding is the WEE bits with bison and salmon (stinky!) They seem to enjoy it.

YUM YUM is what I call my home made: Snack! It is similar to you all. But they would eat it in the early morning as the daddy always wants to give the kids a surprise and this gives him time with them before he goes to work.

My kids get Burger & Rice everynight it seams to help the glands for them, I also have started to add a little brown rice in for fiber. Anne has a sensitive stomach so they also get dry food.

Sounds like your hamburger/rice recipe as a topper on the Solid Gold would be d'og'licious to my guys. We do eat Nature's Variety but my guys also get lots of veggies and fruit as well as some raw meat and they get rice every time we have it. A little variety is what keeps them interested.
