I'd suggest a hypoallergenic shampoo. I once had a doxie that got several skin infections and this was recommended by the vet. I used that type since and have had great success.

I use oatmeal, "milk bath" and Sulfadene. The oatmeal is great for hydrating skin, the "milk bath" is a brand at PetCo and is good for soft silky fur, and Sulfadene is for dandruff and flaky skin (my girl has allergies and gets flaky skin). I use any one of them depending on how their skin or fur looks. Typically with my longhair boy who doesn't have any skin/fur issues I just alternate with the oatmeal and "milk bath". But on my girl, I normally use the Sulfadene.

For a conditioner, I use #1 All Systems: super-rich protein lotion conditioner. I got it from www.petedge.com. And its a concentrated formula, so you just dilute it when you use it. It works really well, and smells great.

And...LOL for in between baths, if they need some "softening" on their fur I use Nova Pearls spray leave-in conditioner from PetCo. The groomers there recommended it to me, and it is GREAT!!

I swear my two have just as many fur-products as I have hair products! :sofunny: I even have perfume and cologne for them

Dixie's vet told us not to bathe the entire body unless she really smelled bad or really dirty. That it is not good for their skin unless needed. She said I could use baby wipes on her winky dink and bottom area if I thought necessary. Also said to just wash their feet if the smell:D.
BUT....She said if you do have to bathe....use BABY Shampoo. I bought the Johnson and Johnson Baby Shampoo.

I let my groomer's vet take care of those issues! :)

Tucker's groomer (and I, if needed) use Earth Bath oatmeal and aloe. I buy it at PetCo and it smells soooooo good. He has no dry skin issues and has soft fur. Tucker's a long hair.

Second that one. We use Earthbath Oatmeal on Dragon too. Love it!

Where do you find a soap free shampoo??? If it has no soap in it, how does it clean?

Bathing isn't necessarily a good thing for your pupper. I do bathe Buddy on a rare occassion when he rolls in something extrordinarily stinky. But that happens very rarely. When it does I use a TropiClean oatmeal shampoo and conditioner. I doubt I have bathed him more than 1/2 a dozen times in the 4 years we've had him. I rely more on keeping his bedding in his kennel clean. I've found that so long as it smells nice, so does he.

Good point Sandy! I notice if I keep Dragons bedding washed a few times a week, my skin itches less when I snuggle with him.

Oh yeah, definitely agree to not bathe them too often. I only bathe them if they start to smell. Otherwise...I use baby wipes on their feet and on Mousse's winky

It seems like when we do wash them then we have to wash them again...and again like they get stinky on purpose! lol Otherwise when they are 'clean' they stay clean for quite a while! I agree...I only do it when necessary.

I just sent my adopter a list of the shampoos I have in the house...one is medicated (antifungal & antibacterial) from the vet, another is oatmeal, another is coconut (both all natural). The coconut one is neat because that company makes different versions I guess you would call it for you to pick & chose what you want this coconut one has lavender for calming and something else for a natural bug repellent, and some other things and it smells great!!

I've only had to give Dixie a bath about 3 times since we've had her. The vet said to use Johnson's Baby Shampoo, so that's what I use.
I do take a cotton BALL and put some alcohol on it and twist it in her ear and run it around the inside of the outside of her ear about once a month or so.....because it does become somewhat smelly. That really helps take the smell away.
I also trim her nails about once a month. It's funny when she sees the clippers coming...she does that little trot run in the other direction. Once I start though she is fine with it.

This is what I use...http://grooming.petedge.com/EQyss-Micro-Tek-Medicated-Shampoo-EQ10616.pro?parentCategoryId=190&categoryId=213&subCategoryId=275 Molly only gets groomed once or twice a year but Maggie ,my Bichon must be groomed every 6 weeks and she has very itchy sensitive skin. I had a groomer who used this on her and it's the only thing that doesn't irritate her so I bought it and bring it to the groomer now everytime I have her done. This women who introduced me to this line of products said she uses them on her horses and herself. I used it on myself when I was going through an itchy phase. It did help.:D

I use baby shampoo and put skin so soft from Avon in their bath water. The skin so soft also helps in the summer time with flees if they have them.

I use an all natural one called "Buddy Wash". I use both the shampoo and conditioner but they also have "inbetween bath spray" and a couple other products. I used it once and I'll never go back to anything else! It smells great and my dogs never have a trace of dry skin even though I bathe them once every three weeks. I remember they used to get dry skin easily. Not anymore! It also makes their fur extremely soft and tangle free, even on my little min pin/cairn mix who normally has very coarse fur.
Hehe :)

Anything with Oatmeal in it is great, try and use a good quality product if you can. I have to bath Stanley at a minumum of once a week with some special allergy shampoo and CONDITIONER :D (at $27 a bottle it aint cheap) but thats because of his skin and infection. I bath jackson regulary too because he gets jealous that Stanley has a bath and he doesn't, sometimes i just put him in the water and pretend - he doesn't care though as long as he is in the bath he is happy - he falls asleep at times and i have to hold his head up above the water.

I use Tropiclean shampoo and conditioner....they are all natural and smell soo good, I have not had problems with the dryness I have had from others.
But I do not bath them very often, Speedy gets a full bath once a week, but is in the water several times a week for water therapy.

I use baby wipes a lot for the freshen up or for ickys that get on them that do not need a full bath. I like the shea butter ones the best, That is what I use on Speedy daily after he goes to the bathroom and before bed to clean up anything on his belly and peen area stays clean so he does not get infections.

Because we don't bathe them that often, I still have the same bottle of Veterinarian's Best Natures Salon Herbal Dog & Cat Peaches n cream shampoo I bought when Mama was really young. Because now there's two puppers and one smelly cat, the bottle is now almost empty. :D
I'll have to go looking for more natural stuff soon.

Mine are all so stinky right now, but with the cold temps i don' want to bathe them. i din't know what it is thats making them smell so bad
Sometimes tho they even get a naturally sweet smell.. I know that sounds strange but does anyone else ever notice that they smell kinda sweet?

I've never really noticed a "sweet smell" to Dixie. The thing that smells bad on her is her ears if you smell under the ear flap. And her feet always smell like popcorn/fritos!
Instead of bathing her body, I just take cotton balls and dip them in a little bit of alcohol and rub the inside of her ears with the cotton ball. It does help a lot!
Oh...and of course her breath isn't the greatest. It's not her teeth because her teeth are bright white with no tartar at the gum line.

Yes, especially on the top of their heads, I love to smootch one sniff their little heads! They do smell sweet, but they also smell like fritos on their little feets and Penny has stinky breath.:Sun2:
