Initially I was glad to find this board because of some slight "temperament" problems we're having with our new puppy, Annie. I never anticipated how involved I would become in reading all these posts and how differently I would feel about buying puppies and breeding in general. I consider myself an intelligent person, just very uneducated about the world of dogs and breeding. After reading the posts about Queenie, I was in tears. I've never even considered myself much of an animal lover, I like them as much as the next person, but never been involved in animals rights, or anything like that. What a different person I feel I'm becoming after joining this board. I feel a little guilty for buying a puppy for our daughter for Christmas, instead of rescuing an older dog. I just didn't know. Fortunately, we did do some research and I knew enough to buy from someone with "home-raised" puppies, not a kennel. And then I read the article about back-yard breeding. At this point, the best we can do in the "grand scheme of things" is make sure we get our dog spayed as soon as she is old enough - up 'til now, we were undecided as to whether or not we wanted Annie to have puppies. And in the event we ever decide to add another pet to our family, you can bet it will be a rescue dog. Thank you Dukey's mom, Roxane, and others for helping to "educate" me and my family about the horrors caused by back-yard breeding, puppy mills, etc. It's easy to imagine myself as one of those idiot back-yard breeders, had I not happened upon this board.

Oops, I need to clarify a thing or two. I said I never really considered myself an animal lover...what I MEANT by that is that I've never been involved in an "activist" role on behalf of animals before. I like animals, and have been pleasantly surprised to find myself becoming so attached to my daughter's puppy. In fact, everyone in our family feels that she thinks I'm her MOM! <IMG SRC="http://dachsie.org/ubb/cwmsmilies/cwm38.gif" border=0>
Also, I'm sure it must seem strange that I post at such "uncivilized" times of the night (midnight to 2:00 a.m.) Trust me, that is only because I've been off work for the past 3 weeks and I've become an insomniac! I work in an elementary school and we are still "iced-in" here in Arkansas. We're hoping to get to go to school by Friday or Monday! Anyway, when I'm back on my "real" schedule, I hope to be online when some of you are and get to chat during the live chat sessions. Looking forward to learning lots more and hopefully being a "contributing" member of this community at some point. http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/biggrin.gif

Dear Annie's granny:
I am sending Greta the Stout and Baylea the It Girl to your home, immediately, to give you big hugs and kisses!http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/heart.gif
If it weren't for people like yourself who are opened minded enough to learn why rescue even exists, the overpopulation situation would be even worse than it is.http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/mad.gif
Watch out though, little by little we will draw you in and the next thing you know you will be writing letters, handing out leaflets and perhaps helping with a phase of rescue! Fair warning! http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/lol.gif
Seriously, thanks so much for sharing your thoughts. Delighted you found us,
Roxane and crew
